Flyers, Bobrovsky Start Season With A Win
October 8th 2010 02:21
Everyone predicted that Boucher would get the start. The veteran goaltender was a known asset whereas Bobrovsky was ultimately an unknown(although he had a nice preseason). Flyers coach, Peter Laviolette, went with a hunch and made the right choice. Bobrovsky was easily the main reason the Flyers even had a chance tonight. The Flyers looked shaky early on as Coach Laviolette used his timeout early in the game after a few consecutive icings. This timeout did not help the cause as the Flyers spent most of the first period in their own zone being out shot 15-9. Bobrovsky dominated in the first making save after save, some in very unorthodox ways. The Flyers were lucky to have the first period end 0-0. In the second the Flyers struck early, just 2:51 into the second period. Danny Briere had a beautiful tip-in goal on the powerplay set up by the great passing of Mike Richards. Towards the end of the period the Flyers got a two goal lead as James van Riemsdyk took a shot coming down the wing that was deflected on net by Darroll Powe causing Pittsburgh goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury, to give up a rebound which Blair Betts quickly slammed home.
The Flyers went into the third period with a 2-0 lead as Bobrovsky was eyeing the shutout. This hope was short lived as just 44 seconds into the third, the Penguins scored on a strange play. Tyler Kennedy of the Penguins shot the puck from a sharp angle on the side of the net after receiving a great pass from defenseman Paul Martin. Bobrovsky would have had a better chance to make the save, but he lost the edge on his skate which limited his movement. With only a one goal lead, Andrej Meszaros was called for roughing at 3:15. While on the penalty kill, Claude Giroux intercepted a pass to Paul Martin and pulled a nice little move on the breakaway for the shorthanded goal giving the Flyers the 3-1 lead with only 15 minutes to go. This 2 goal lead was short lived as Goligoski tipped in a shot from Michalek with one second left on the powerplay. The Flyers held onto this one goal lead to secure the win as Sergei Brobrovsky became the first goaltender to win their first NHL start since Jonathan Bernier did on September 29, 2007 as the Kings beat the Ducks 4-1 in London, England.
The Flyers next game is Saturday October 9th at 8:00 PM in St. Louis. I expect Bobrovsky to get the start and hopefully we will see Chris Pronger make his season debut after his arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason. It is nice to have hockey back since that is by far my favorite sport, but right now, don't forget to watch the Phillies tomorrow. The Philadelphia Phillies play game 2 of the NLDS tomorrow night at 6:00 PM on TBS as Roy Oswalt takes on Bronson Arroyo. Fans have a lot of expectations for Oswalt after the performance Halladay had yesterday. Here's hoping for a win.
