Everyone predicted that Boucher would get the start. The veteran goaltender was a known asset whereas Bobrovsky was ultimately an unknown(although he had a nice preseason). Flyers coach, Peter Laviolette, went with a hunch and made the right choice. Bobrovsky was easily the main reason the Flyers even had a chance tonight. The Flyers looked shaky early on as Coach Laviolette used his timeout early in the game after a few consecutive icings. This timeout did not help the cause as the Flyers spent most of the first period in their own zone being out shot 15-9. Bobrovsky dominated in the first making save after save, some in very unorthodox ways. The Flyers were lucky to have the first period end 0-0. In the second the Flyers struck early, just 2:51 into the second period. Danny Briere had a beautiful tip-in goal on the powerplay set up by the great passing of Mike Richards. Towards the end of the period the Flyers got a two goal lead as James van Riemsdyk took a shot coming down the wing that was deflected on net by Darroll Powe causing Pittsburgh goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury, to give up a rebound which Blair Betts quickly slammed home.

The Flyers went into the third period with a 2-0 lead as Bobrovsky was eyeing the shutout. This hope was short lived as just 44 seconds into the third, the Penguins scored on a strange play. Tyler Kennedy of the Penguins shot the puck from a sharp angle on the side of the net after receiving a great pass from defenseman Paul Martin. Bobrovsky would have had a better chance to make the save, but he lost the edge on his skate which limited his movement. With only a one goal lead, Andrej Meszaros was called for roughing at 3:15. While on the penalty kill, Claude Giroux intercepted a pass to Paul Martin and pulled a nice little move on the breakaway for the shorthanded goal giving the Flyers the 3-1 lead with only 15 minutes to go. This 2 goal lead was short lived as Goligoski tipped in a shot from Michalek with one second left on the powerplay. The Flyers held onto this one goal lead to secure the win as Sergei Brobrovsky became the first goaltender to win their first NHL start since Jonathan Bernier did on September 29, 2007 as the Kings beat the Ducks 4-1 in London, England.

The Flyers next game is Saturday October 9th at 8:00 PM in St. Louis. I expect Bobrovsky to get the start and hopefully we will see Chris Pronger make his season debut after his arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason. It is nice to have hockey back since that is by far my favorite sport, but right now, don't forget to watch the Phillies tomorrow. The Philadelphia Phillies play game 2 of the NLDS tomorrow night at 6:00 PM on TBS as Roy Oswalt takes on Bronson Arroyo. Fans have a lot of expectations for Oswalt after the performance Halladay had yesterday. Here's hoping for a win.

Andreas Nodl was the final cut today for the Philadelphia Flyers. Nodl, 23, was sent to the Phantoms today in what is likely only temporary. This move is going to save the Flyers a bit of cap room while the Laperriere situation is figured out. Laperriere has been placed on short-term IR with post-concussion syndrome while doctors try to figure out the best course of action for him. If this means the end of Lappy's career, then the hockey world will lose one of it's finest. In Lappy's short time here in Philadelphia, he quickly became a fan favorite who gave his all every shift, every game. He is a warrior, a great locker room guy, and the type of player you need on your fourth line.Hopefully something develops soon, and hopefully it is something positive for Lappy.

Michael Leighton, goaltender, was placed on the injured reserve with a bulging disc he suffered in the preseason. This leaves the Flyers with Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky as the two goaltenders on the roster. Bobrovsky impressed in the preseason, but will not start tomorrow against Pittsburgh. I imagine this is because with Boucher, you know what you will get. Bobrovsky on the other hand is young and inexperienced, especially with the North American game. I hope they use Bobrovsky fairly often though as being the backup does minimal for his development. The game will be televised on VS at 7:00 PM ET as the Flyers take on the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Roy Halladay Makes Magic...Again

October 7th 2010 01:39
In the days leading up to this moment, all the talk was what will Roy do in his first postseason appearance. Would he continue his dominance of the NL or would he crack under the pressure? Halladay proved the doubters wrong today as he pitched just the second no-hitter in postseason history. The last time this happened was Don Larsen in 1956. 54 years later Halladay made history not only for becoming the second pitcher to record a postseason no-hitter, but also becoming the fifth player in history to have two no-hitters in the same season. The last player to toss two no-fitters in the same season was the great Nolan Ryan in 1973.

Roy Halladay struck out 8 and allowed 1 walk to Jay Bruce in the fifth inning. Halladay tossed 104 pitches and only 25 balls. He was in full control from start to finish against the powerful offense of the Reds. The no-hitter was not entirely smooth as things got a bit scary with the last out. Halladay's 0-2 pitch bounced just in front of the plate and catcher, Carlos Ruiz, had to make a great play to insure the end of the game.

Currently, the Phillies have a 1-0 lead in the NLDS over the Cincinnati Reds. Friday's game will be at 6:00 PM at Citizen's Bank Park with Roy Oswalt up against Bronson Arroyo.

Veteran Right Winger Bill Guerin was released today after signing a professional tryout with the Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran managed only one goal and one shootout goal in the preseason. To go with this he turned the puck over several times a game if not just one period. The signs of aging are setting in as Guerin was lackluster at times and this is coming from a guy that thought he had a legitimate shot to make the team. After all this, I still believe Guerin to be an NHL player if used in the proper role he could play on a lower line to provide veteran leadership with a team like the Islanders or Panthers. If these were Guerin's last days in the NHL, then I wish him the best as he was a great NHLer.

In other news the Flyers have waived goaltender, Johan Backlund, and winger, David Laliberte. Additionally, they sent Eric Gustafsson, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Ben Holmstrom, Eric Testwuide, and Jon Kalinski to the Phantoms. The two surprises for me were Backlund as this means Bobrovsky is likely to the NHL backup, and Kalinski as I believe he was solid defensively and handled himself well in the faceoff dot. With the demotion of Kalinski, this likely means that Andreas Nodl has earned his spot with the Flyers this year at least until Laperriere is able to return. Hopefully Bobrovsky will get several games early on until Leighton returns. Ideally, Bobrovsky should start in the AHL because being a normal backup will not help his development. It doesn't feel right going into a season with Boucher as the starter

Starting the Blog

October 5th 2010 01:41
I have been watching Philly sports as long as I remember and with this blog I intend on posting up-to-date information about all major Philly sports teams. I will weigh in on all trades, waivers, signings, etc. Now, before I get too far, I will introduce myself a bit. I am 21 years old and currently am in my senior year of college. I was born in Philadelphia, but no longer live there. My father made sure that I still was surrounded by Philadelphia sports even though I was practically raised in New York City and South Jersey. I cannot promise equal coverage of all four major Philly sports teams as I must admit the Flyers are my favorite closely followed by the Phils. Well, thanks for reading my initial post. This is my first blog and I intend on posting regularly, all the while still improving.
