Hi! My name is Jacqui and I love to write just about anything; poetry to short stories.
I've always wanted to be a music journalist so having www.gigsnreviews.com allows me to fulfil a dream.
This morning I saw this video and absolutely cracked up! Only an Aussie band can get away with it! It’s a cover of Beyonce’s Single Ladies with a country hillbilly spin! Even the country legend John Williamson makes an appearance in the video! It’s a crack-up.
The Dark Horse Tour
Nickelback Rod Laver Arena
Monday, November 16, 2009
It was amazing to be a part of such a vibrant and voicous crowd last night at Nickelback’s first Melbourne show. As Chad later said, “it should feel like a party, not a performance.” And what a party it was!
Even before the Canadian rockers came onstage, looking around you could see that everybody was there to have a rockin time. As a warm-up over the speakers played the likes of Van Halen and my all-time favourite rock tune Lakini’s Juice by Live which everyone gave a big cheer to.
The stage was massive as you’d expect for the band that has packed out stadiums worldwide. Even though last night was obviously indoors, they still used pyrotechnics and stage effects. At one stage the drummer with his drumkit were lifted and brought forward. The other bandmembers used the stage’s walk-out quite frequently.
Chad was overly chatting throughout the night; talking to the crowd after every song. He later appologised to parents because they would have to explain to their kids about some of the mature content he said.
Nickelback have a tradition called ‘beer o’clock’ where cups of beer are thrown out to the crowd. For the Dark Horse Tour they throw cups of beer and Jagermeister shotties from cannons. Also tour t-shirts were caught by some lucky fans.
Chad announced he was “having amazing time” last night and even shared a joke or two!
The show ended with a big bang, actually quite a few big bangs with indoor fireworks and big flames at each side of the stage.

Gigs ‘n Reviews’ Myspace Discovery
The Paper Scissors
Due to computer problems (don’t you love them?) and the flu I haven’t been able to do a Gigs ‘n Reviews’ Myspace Discovery for a few weeks.
I have decided to drop “weekly” as I found out organsing and preparing for interviews takes some time itself! So I hope you will still enjoy my posts whenever they come. Now onto this edition of Gigs ‘n Reviews’ Myspace Discovery.
The Paper Scissors
Many of you would have heard the song We Don’t Walk from a TV commercial a couple of years ago. It was a song that got stuck in your days, an absolute winner.
On their Myspace you can listen to five of The Paper Scissors’ tracks and I guarantee your mind will be grooving to these tunes all day. Their lyrics are fun and poppy, mixed with rock.
I was lucky to interview Xavier Patrick who’s the bass player. So enjoy this little interview:
1. Can you give us the scoop on your new single which comes out in November?
Our new single is called “T-T-Time”, written by Jai Pyne, produced by Ivan Lisyak – it’s a love song dedication. We are very happy with this song, and very excited that it’s being played to the public. It is the first single off our ‘to be released’ album. We recorded T-T-Time on Byron whilst doing our ‘Howl’ E.P. tour, with the help of engineer James Boundy. The song represents how our band sounds now that we have become a three piece. Jai, Ivan and I have been writing so many new songs together. It is all very exciting.... And possibly a little romantic.
2. On Rage’s site I read that you Jai received some cash from a record company then you formed The Paper Scissors. How did you manage that?
Jai received the cash from Sony as part of a development deal. We were able to put together a basic home studio for writing demos. Jai was under keen watchful eyes. As the band was still forming, it was pre-mature to be signing into a contract with such a big label.
3. How fun or difficult was it to make your debut album Less Talk, More Paper Scissors yourselves?
Creating LT, MPS was fun to begin with but proved to be more difficult as time progressed; especially when the bass player and drummer could not be in a room together.
Having a finished product was the greatest part of this album. The process was painful, but an amazing experience none the less. Not saying that no fun was had making Less Talk More Paper Scissors,
But it proved to be an eye opening experience that the band was able to learn a great deal from.
4. Jai, what kind of things influenced you when you went to New York?
It's a crazy city. I always thought that Sydney was really amazingly multi-cultural, with people from so many diverse countries, but NYC is just like being on another planet. It is so fast paced, and dirty, and there are so many different colours and shapes and so many crazy lives being led.
It's also the centre of the universe when it comes to music, and there is a really thriving art scene.
More than anything though, being away and getting that perspective on your normal life back home inspired me. I wrote lots about being away, and being at the top of the world, so far away from friends and loved ones down the arse end of the world in Aus.
5. What has helped you to get exposed?
Triple J and FBI radio stations were the biggest influence in our exposure. They have been very supportive and influential - it’s amazing the relationships that are built over time and how important these strong relationships are for the future of our music. Both radio stations have taken on our new single, T-T-Time immediately. Also, having our songs played on Underbelly and the Wireless and Riva commercials, took us to people’s living rooms.
6. Are you bringing out a new album soon?
Yes. It is very exciting and it’s proving to be a far more enjoyable and matured process than the first album! Jai, Ivan and I are all very excited and are producing music as fast as our independent budget can allow us. Early next year we will have the album ready for the masses – but until then you get a sneak peak with our new single T-T-Time. Just recently we were able to knock out some songs at Electric Avenue (Studio) where the likes of INXS, Kylie Minogue and Kate Ceberano, among others, recorded their own songs.... And it is always humbling and inspirational experience playing your own music in rooms that contain such a history. We have also been recording in Byron with James Boundy, who has been incredible support for the band, and we have been creating an exciting future with James and his technical prowess and abilities. I guess to those who know our first album, - be it a lover or hater - you can look forward to a new line up with drummer Ivan Lisyak joining the frey, and essential a more matured ‘futuristic’ (let’s hope my band don’t bash me for saying so) sounding TPS.
7. We Don’t Walk was brought to our attentions with a TV ad. Was it weird hearing yourselves on TV?
It was weird. It always is. TV is a big entertainment medium, and being a part of it is an exciting experience, even if it is a TV commercial. What was very strange, though, was programming rage. We all grew up watching Rage late at night; ABC music television itself was a huge influence on us. And seeing yourself on the show takes the cake. It was unexpected for TPS, to be invited to be guest programmers, it was quite nerve-wreckin’, but a definite highlight of creating music together.
8. Sorry but I have to ask, do you regularly play the game paper rock scissors?
Actually, no – very rarely. Our spare time together is filled mostly with puns. But, normally, we would never reveal this to our punters. Ouch. Sorry.
A very big thank you to Xavier from The Paper Scissors for taking time out from their busy schedules to do this interview. Best of luck for their new album!
David, on Sunrise last week you got me all excited about your NEW DVD, Keep On Lovin, so I went out and bought it. Last night we popped it on and to our bitter disappointment we realised it was in fact the same concert as the Good Lovin DVD which we already have, but the Tour Edition!
Secondly, there are no Victorian dates listed as part of your national tour! We love you… Come to Melbourne
I don’t know about you, but there hasn’t been really exciting new music on Rage and Video Hits lately. On Saturday I saw two new songs that woke up my inner ear though.
I get what you're saying, but there are plenty of Bon Jovi tribute bands who use 'Bon Jovi' in their names. Is Jon going to threaten them with legal action?
I think most of us didn't realise how tricky the friendship between Orble and Adsense is. Unlike Blogger, Orble don't allow you to easily add meta tags to your pages, which means you can't add your blog to a blog-list, therefore unenabling you to get higher traffic.
I'm extremely grateful to Orble, having www.gigsnreviews.com gives me a purpose and a sense of duty to the community. I get a thrill everytime I earn a few dollars.
