The Rest
I'm sorry that Gigs ‘n Reviews’ Weekly Myspace Discovery has been missing for a month or so. Our American adventure took more out of me than I had originally thought. But enough about me, onto the music.
On their Myspace page I was immediately attracted to writing about the Canadian band The Rest when reading to make their second album Everyone All At Once they went away to a forest and woke up to a lake.
Although The Rest’s music isn’t my cup of tea, I can appreciate how they used their camping experience to create songs full of earthiness and freedom.
Their Myspace features four tracks, each with intriguing beats and tunes. As an eight-piece band they use many instruments like the violin, piano and organ to create their unique sound. Their track Walk On Water (auspicious beginnings) is a track you could drift to another world.
The Rest reminds me of the Australian band Augie March and a very early Powderfinger. So if you want to find out more about The Rest, go to http://www.myspace.com/therestband.
When I found out that Jackson had died, it was very bizarre. I found myself questioning the whole scenario. You know the heart attack, then the drugs. For someone who loved his children so much, to me the situation is hard to fathom. However, Jackson was a very different human being, one that we may never come to understand.
Around five years of age I was a big Jackson fan. I had pictures of him contacted to my tray. I remember being so distraught when his hair caught fire and being absolutely petified watching the Thriller video! He was definitely a clever man who created a different medium in music videos.
As the world mourns the King Of Pop, I’m just hoping that not many more people won’t come out with major revelations that will ruin Michael Jackson’s legacy, especially for his children’s sake.

Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
Pink @ Rod Laver Arena - 23/06/09
Rod Laver Arena was turned into Pink’s Funhouse last night for one of her many Australian concerts. There were fans dressed in pink clothes, pink hats and pink wigs. You could say it was a sea of pink from wall to wall.
The show began with a rockin’ cover of the ACDC classic Highway To Hell, but Pink and her band didn’t appear until half way through the song. Her band was finally revealed when a colorful backdrop was lifted and Pink was raised from an underground bunker in the middle of the arena.
The show was amazing. The stage was amazing. Pink was amazing! There was too much to take in because there was always several things going on onstage. At each end of the large stage two slides sat and during many songs Pink and her dancers kept us entertained.
One of the covers Pink and her band did was The Divinyls’ I Touch Myself. The arena went dark and Pink and a red couch were in the spotlight. As the song has a sexy nature, Pink was very raunchy with her vocals and movements. The crowd went absolute quiet during this performance. During her smash hit So What the dancers broke into a pillow fight while being in their underwear!
A surprise of the night was when Pink’s keyboardist/pianist started playing beautiful piano which broke into Family Portrait. Joining them was her violinist, making the song even more touching. Don’t Believe You, from her latest album Funhouse, sounded absolutely beautiful with a cello. Then the whole band did an acoustic set in the middle of the arena containing Crystal Ball.
Pink did a really different version of Led Zeppelin’s Ramble On. Then they leapt into the ultimate Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody when the entire arena sang.
At the start of the track Funhouse two giant blow-up dolls appeared at either side of the stage; an evil clown and an evil joker. From what I remember there were dancers dangling from the roof doing acrobatics as well as dancers on the ground.
The last song of the night was breathtaking and beautiful. It was Pink’s pretty Glitter In The Air and Pink was hanging from a sling doing twirls, swirls and God knows what! And she was singing while she was doing all of this, proving she’s really a superwoman.
Here’s the song list from last night’s concert:
Highway To Hell
Just Like A Pill
Who Knew
Habit To Myself
Touch Myself
Play Don’t Leave Me
U And Ur Hand
Leave Me Alone
So What
Family Portrait
Don’t Believe You
Crystal Ball
Ramble On
Bohemian Rhapsody
Funhouse
Crazy
Get This Party Started
Glitter In The Air
The start of the week began with the excitement of an upcoming Keith Urban Australian tour (well this was exciting for me anyway!) I’m counting down the days to the 29th when the tickets for his Melbourne show go on sale.
Meanwhile tickets for John Farnham’s “By Demand” tour are selling like there’s no tomorrow!! My Aunty looked up the ticket prices and they start at $129.00…at The Palais!!! That’s insane! Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes is doing a show there in July and his tickets are $80.00! John is one of Australia’s best performers, but I’m scratching my head about his ticket prices
