Clean the Green and Natural Way

December 7th 2010 02:55
I hate using personal care, laundry and cleaning products that are loaded with perfumes and harmful chemicals, but equally hate paying the higher prices of some of the so-called green and environmentally friendly cleaners. I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the things that Lyn Lomasi shared in Naturally Greener Ways to Sanitize Your Bathroom.

gas mask, chemical cleaners

I use vinegar a lot for general cleaning and deodorizing and use some products containing tea-tree oil from a well-known company, but I never would have thought of herbs for cleaning and disinfecting. See Lyn's article for good scoop on ridding your home of harmful cleaning products.

Everyone loves a white Christmas, but thinking eco-friendly can mean saving green rather than spending it this holiday season.

The Christmas holiday is traditionally a season of big ... lights and decorations mean a bigger electric bill. Costly gifts scream for equally expensive wrapping. All too soon the excitement is over and you're left with a pile of trash.

Jaipi Sixbear shares how you can not only cut costs going into Christmas, but also how to lessen the negative environmental impact coming out of the holiday season. Start here and take the challenge to make this your greenest Christmas ever.

Organic cigarettes made from tobacco grown without pesticides and fungicides are thought to be healthier for the smoker, but they may be more environmentally friendly too.

We all know that smoking is harmful for those who light up and those around them, but what if there's a way to make cigarettes just a little less toxic?

Angie Mohr shares her thoughts on how growing organic tobacco for cigarettes may be able to do just that.

Even without the space to sow a traditional garden, most anyone can grow a bounty of vegetables in containers. In an earlier blog post I shared examples of items you might have on hand that are suitable to plant your vegetable garden. If none of those are taking up space in your closet or garage, take being green one step further and use the very bag of garden soil you just brought home.

Vegetables can be grown in many types of bags, and if you just purchased garden soil, you have a ready-made container. Reusable grocery sacks can be used as planters also, as can dog/cat food and feed bags from your pets and livestock. When your worn out tote bag has been retired from carrying groceries home, it can still pull duty as a garden planter to grow your own vegetables

Not all plants and shrubs can thrive in clay soil that doesn't drain well. If you live in an area with more clay than sand, you need to research which plants will flourish in soil that stays moist for a longer period.

There are a number of shrubs that tolerate clay soil very well. My favorite is the Japanese Quince which provides one of the first blooms of spring in a beautiful rose color. Some varieties produce a small fruit that is too bitter to eat, but makes a wonderful jelly

I love to tend my flower garden but shy away from anything that looks perfectly manicured. I much prefer perennials and wildflowers strewn haphazardly to fancier varieties with a more structured layout. A bit of whimsy amid the flora is a bonus, and a discarded saucer from an old flower pot set atop a tree stump is a nice addition that my feathered friends enjoy on a hot summer afternoon.

Container gardening is all the rage these days. Even if not a landowner, most everyone has the space for a few of their favorite vegetables on a deck or patio. You can even grow your mini crops in that bag of garden soil you just bought (more about that here) .

All of these were grown in containers

I prefer to use a shower curtain in my bath instead of a shower door (see why), but like many others, I'm concerned about adding more plastic to the already overtaxed landfills.
