Shop til you drop in Melbourne

March 12th 2008 04:14
There are so many places in Melbourne to go shopping, it’s hard to know where to start. If you’re like me, and you like vintage and retro clothes dispersed with the odd designer accessory, the you have a plethora of shops to choose from. The biggest problem? Knowing where the bargains are hiding. Of course, they’re not advertised on billboards and street signs, you have to KNOW where they are. You have to KNOW who to ask and where to look.

The opp shops around areas such as Toorak, Camberwell, Hawthorn and Brighton have proven to be little treasure troves. As the area is generally populated by the rich middle-upperclass women who like to tailor their wardrobe to match the season’s fashions, then quite often you will find that once worn Sass & Bide dress that is “so last season” sitting delicately on the hanger just waiting for the professional bargain hunter like yourself to come along.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints I have little to no time to wander the streets of the inner east and northern suburbs searching for the elusive bargains, but on my previous hunt in a Salvation Army store in Camberwell I found a brilliant maroon Guerlain bag that was big enough to fit all my uni books, and in immaculate condition. How much? $7.50. Get my drift?

So, for the next few weeks or months I am dedicating myself to finding those little gems that are so typically Melbourne, hiding away in alleys and nondescript streets where the latest (albeit last season) fashion sits patiently waiting for people like you and me to come along, buy it and love it.

Keep checking in and I will let you know of any new surprises I have found- or not. Depending on how good it is!

Approval of the Mafia

February 21st 2008 01:35
Well, the much awaited first episode of Cashmere Mafia was on last night. Within the first 5 minutes my husband commented "I hate it already," which to me is a great sign! Of course, this didn't stop him from laughing a couple of times throughout (though he tried to cover it up with a cough once or twice- unsuccessfully, I might add).

So what did women around Australia think?

Well, it's no SATC, and it never, ever will be. SATC was the first of it's kind, and will probably be the last of it's kind. It was difficult sitting through CM and NOT comparing it but it was inevitable that comparisons would be made. After all, many people were calling it the "new" SATC.

I have to say, I don't think I will relate to the characters of CM as much as I did SATC, and I think my friends would agree. Although maybe it's too early at this stage to tell. You would think that the fact that none of the SATC charachters were married or had children (not for a long time, anyway- they all started out sexy, single and childless) would have made it harder for someone like me, a married mother (albeit still young) to relate to.

There was also probably a little bit more corniness and cheesiness in the show than I would usually like to see in a show of this genre. And it was a little bit jumpy. And there was constant music in the background which I found annoying after a while, because it made it sound as though it was constantly building up to something but never quite got there. I wasn't really able to just relax, and sit back and watch it as easily as I could SATC.

But having said that, it's NOT SATC and I am aware of that, and it still fills a void that was created when SATC finished. A much needed show that women can relate to on a personal level, that helps us remember that we aren't alone on this planet supposedly dominated by men, and that with more shows like SATC and CM we might just become empowered enough to take over the world. I will definitely keep watching.

The Mafia is here!!

February 20th 2008 05:52
Cashmere Mafia
It's here, it's here, and I am so excited. I can safely say my friends and I have been eagerly awaiting this day since we heard about it. We are hoping it will fill a void that was left so empty, so desolate, that I thought it would be impossible to fill.
Of course, one shouldn't put that amount of expectation on something they know nothing about, but I just can't help myself!

Why?

It's the beginning of the new generation of SATC. For those of you that know what those four letters stand for, you will probably be waiting as expectantly as I am for the same show. Cashmere Mafia.

There are so many reality shows, sitcoms, soapies, and more boys shows than you can deal with in any one night (who can honestly say they can do several hours of CSI, Law and Order and SVU without a hit of femininity involved?) that television is sorely in need of a Sex and the City replacement, and I believe Cashmere Mafia is it.

If you have had your head in the dirt for the last few months, here is a quick exerpt from CM's homepage:

"Four ambitious, sexy women who have been best friends since business school, Mia, Zoe, Juliet and Caitlin, try to have it all. They aren't just powerful and intelligent as singular executive sensations in a man's world; they've bonded into a formidable unit- a female "boys' club" -- to support and counsel each other through good times and bad. How better to climb up the corporate ladder than with your buddies at your side?"

The cast includes sexy Lucy Liu; Australia's own Miranda Otto (played Lindy Chamberlain in the miniseries Through My Eyes); Frances O'Connor; and Bonnie Somerville (NYPD Blue and The O.C) It's been pretty damn successful in the US.

CM is, of course, set in good ol' NYC (where ELSE would it be set?) and promises to tease and tantalise us with insights into the successful woman's life of work, relationships and friendships. Men, tonight is not the night for you, tonight is about us, the women of Australia, so leave us alone for one hour and we will thank you for it! Unless, of course, you want more of an insight into the minds of women everywhere- you never know, this could be your new dating bible!

Cashmere Mafia is on at 9:30pm tonight (Wed 20 Feb) on Channel 9.
