It takes village and then some

October 9th 2008 08:54
Thank you to all who have sent words of encouragement for 5Towns. Amazing how words can strike an absolute cord, and bolster a weary spirit to keep on, keeping on. But there is one stunning truth that has to be aired - 5Towns would not be, if it was not for a lot of people, giving time, product and resources.

Take Peter, our first aid/massage/driver/mechanic/p athfinder and now supplier of trailer guy. He was minding his own business studying at TAFE when we sent out a request for someone to join the trip and help with recovery sessions. Peter put his hand up, and at the same moment, raised our odds of success dramatically.

I've been waiting for (unnamed org.) to come through with a pledge to loan a trailer, which would provide (unnamed org.) a fair amount of publicity. I got a call, 15 minutes to 18.00 tonight, that the trailer was a no-go, because someone was unavailable to provide insurance clearance - this the reply after knowing about 5Towns for 6 months...

Enter Peter, the man, legend and guy who owns a trailer! Don't forget, we don't know each other, have only met once since he volunteered and here he is not only putting his trailer into the mix, but he's fixing it up for the trip, the night before we are going to leave.

The past week has been a flurry of activity and when it comes to the crunch, there are those who step up to the plate and there are those who go lame. I've seen in fast forward action, exactly who is who. And as frustrating it is with the lame ducks, it's stupid to rob yourself of the joy that the champs bring by doing more than asked.

I guess it's a matter of focus. And with my focus well and truly placed on Peter, Josh, Terrance and Rohan (who are joining the ride the whole way), and Carol, Kym & Cherrie Browne at the Lock hotel, who gave 5 rooms for free (they hadn't even heard of 5Towns!), and then everyone else across South Australia, who have donated, asked favors, rattled a can, put up posters, provided free advertising and a million other things.

Talk about gratitude. Which is what I feel oodles of the night before we are to drive out of Adelaide. 5Towns has become a laboratory of people, and their amazing ability to make you smile, shake your head, and give thanks for the best part of people, doing their best.
