Is she or isn't she?

September 3rd 2008 15:54
Bettie Page

We all know that Bettie Page is known for being the ultimate sex vixen, in her dominatrix "get-ups".. But i can't help to think she was a victim. Those who photographed her really took advantage of her, and the fact she just wanted to make people happy and put a smile on their faces. It is also known that she was a Christian and often asked the photographers not to curse around her...even though she was semi-nude, or otherwise. She was a simple girl from Tennessee, and wanted to make it as an actress but was never taken seriously because of her "southern accent". Her child like enthusiasm was her ultimate downfall. I feel she was a victim of circumstance, and yet adored by billions......

I come from Bettie's hometown and she is not even really recognized here much. Only to the artist is she accepted for her true contribution to the arts. Bettie said in interviews in later life that in the end she was proud of the photos that captured her as a young a pretty girl and that she will always be remembered that way. Small payment for the life she gave away with nothing to show for it. Now that she is in her eighties and alone.

Well, if it weren't for my favorite artist, Olivia Deberardinis....i don't think anyone would really celebrate or even know Bettie!

I think the post-'80s "pinup" trend has taken Bettie's relatively innocent sexuality and turned it into an iconic commodity.

I remember when I discovered her in the '80s, the only place you could find her was in specialty magazines through mail order.

Dita von Teese must have learnt a few tricks from Bettie
