Surviving Rural Life - by bumpkin

The lastest fashion?

September 15th 2006 10:16
For my readers who have seen this before, apologies, I have just discovered how to add post categories and I would love a comment or two from the fashion conscious among the readers -so have resubmitted this under Fashion. Hope that is allowed - and I promise not to do it again!

What's this with the holey jeans?
What is it with the fashion for young men these days? I really don’t want to sound like an old fuddy- duddy. I have been through the black beanie pulled over the eyes and the shorts with one hundred pockets that are impossible to iron. I even relented to the jeans that have been stone washed so they look as if they are five years old when you buy them. Mind you I did make a suggestion that if my son went to St Vinnie’s or the local Op shop he could get them for 50c. But now I discover that the most expensive jeans in the shops these days have actually got holes in them and are of course frayed around the cuffs.

Give me a break – I could give you at least half a dozen pairs of jeans like that right now. They are sitting in the mending pile at home. I could also include ingrained grass stains, manure stains and a few blood stains - adding character to the product.
Of course I did see that the jeans in the shop are fairly selective as to where the tears are situated. I note there are no rips around the crutch or just next to the zip. Nor are there any with a three cornered tear caused by barbed wire in the buttocks of the garment.
I have a friend who used to mend her husband’s farm clothes. Being particularly artistic, she would use brightly colored materials and fancy stitching, so that her husband looked like a “flower power” throw-back. That practice only lasted a few years. I think her husband throws his jeans out when they tear now.

So what is my choice? Do fancy designs? Not after the comments that followed my friend’s efforts! I suggested to my husband that he has finally come into fashion in his farm gear with its tears and frayed features and that there is no need for me to get out the sewing machine at all - but somehow he didn’t agree. Damn!! I have a sneaking feeling I am not going to get away with that. He points out that there are items in that sewing pile that he has forgotten ever existed – but that’s his story. So I suppose I am going to have to get to work some time soon. However if the rip is around the zip or in the crutch – forget it. Some things just aren’t worth the effort. They will end up being sent to the Op shop – I reckon for rags for the local garage – but one can never tell. They’re just as likely to end up in the posh shops in the city being sold as the newest idea in fashion- stains and all!
Could someone please tell me why kids want to wear these holey jeans? Is it that they want to look poor? or hard working? No! I give up - I need to know Help me someone!
