Is A Decent Coffee Too Much To Ask?
December 3rd 2007 19:22
I have just moved to London – wait – did you just roll your eyes at that?
As I said, I have just moved to London, from Sydney and I a lover of coffee. No let me rephrase; I am a lover of GOOD coffee.
So when I got here, the first mission was to find my ‘local’. If you have ever been to London town you will know that in the city and in the boroughs surrounding it there are many MANY local cafes, they are called Starbucks and Pret-a-mange, Costa, Nero or EAT. I could go on.
Whether you’ve been here or not, you will know that those names are all chains. Yes chains. How many Sydney-siders and coffee-holics get there primo roast from Starbucks?
I didn’t see any hands!
So as you may understand it was blasphemous for me to go and get a coffee from one of these giants – but after looking at my instant alternative at home, I had no choice, I was out muscled. And now for the confession…
I have tried almost all of them for a coffee.
None of them knows what a flat white is NO ONE! I can’t believe it. Starbucks tried to tell me it was an ‘americano with cream’! Are they insane.
So I have taken to ordering cappuccino, double shot no froth – you should see how many looks I get for that one!
So far no satisfaction there…
I guess I will now look further, away from the high-streets and into the windy and cute backstreets…real coffee has to be out there, real coffee made by a REAL barista!
Maybe I am just a coffee snob.
