IRAQ cont'd

Continuing in my supposedly misbegotten praise for George ‘Dubya', let's delve a little deeper into the problems that confront us in the mid-East.
We here in Canada are well aware of the protectionist stance taken by the USA in terms of free trade. I will be the first to say that it should be fair trade instead of free trade. But I have a hard time taking the US to task over this. After all, it seems to be working for China, Korea, Japan and India. They can all send us thousands of things in the way of consumer goods, yet deny us access to their markets with restrictive duties and taxes. It blew me away to find out that if you wanted to make an airline reservation with someone who spoke English, you'd pay extra to have an American speak to you rather than have the call routed through India. How sad is that?
In any case, history seems to be on the Americans side. Consider that as fascists and militarists took to their barbaric posturing in the 1930's, a majority of Americans turned inward, wanting to ignore the world beyond its oceans. American isolationism was read in Berlin and Tokyo as a permanent condition of a decadent American democracy. German Nazis and Japanese militarists saw this as a signal for launching their wars for world domination. America entered the war when Pearl Harbour was attacked. The day that will ‘live in infamy' changed the course of the war and we are all better off for it. It seems some people don't realize that what is happening in Iraq or Afghanistan today falls under the same banner.
As Peter Worthington writes, "War cannot easily be waged peacefully. A report out of Britain recalls that when American forces first went into Afghanistan, the first Taliban they caught were terrified --apparently convinced by their indoctrination that the American monsters would rip their livers out. Consequently, captives babbled like brooks and told all they knew. Then they discovered that American soldiers feed you and generally abide by certain rules and ethics unknown to Taliban and al-Qaida. Thereafter they shut up with no repercussions." America has to play by rules that terrorists don't. There are those who claim the detainees in Gitmo are tortured and abused. This is news from the liberal left and people who believe everything the ACLU wants to cram down their throats. It is nonsense. I have written on this in the past and one commenter told me that for every example I gave of more than fair treatment by the Yanks toward their captives he would show me three who disagree. I'm still waiting.
Mr. Worthington goes on to say, "Peace activists from the West pompously announced they'd be human shields around prospective targets. Once the bombing started, these people fled - - outraged that the Americans could be so inhumane, even though none were targeted. The next warning should be that if human shields remain, they will quickly become ex-human shields. One attack should be sufficient to persuade Palestinian human shields to take cover." Hard to argue with that sort of logic. However, the US and Israel play by rules the Muslim terrorists don't and won't recognize. Hezbollah and Hamas don't warn intended targets of rocket attacks and suicide bombings.
America lost the Vietnam War because it refused to do what was necessary to win. A political decision that cost unnecessary lives on both sides, and achieved nothing. Is that the future of Iraq? It seems so if the Democrats have their way. George's decision to send in more troops seems to be a way to beat these idiots at their own game. And the peaceniks still just don't get it.

SL, unfortunately the US will always have a policy of isolationism and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It shows they hold themselves to a higher standard and no matter how much the peaceniks howl, America doesn't attack unless provoked beyond reason. Was it Roosevelt who said"walk softly and carry a big stick"? When you're the big guy on the block, only an idiot would challenge you. George is showing the world that you just don't mess with the US. He deserves support, but unfortunately he won't get it until he's out of office.
