Introducing Invasive Species to Combat Invasive Species
July 23rd 2010 14:49
The cassava mealybug thrives on cassava crops that were introduced in Africa and Asia from South America. Just like the plants, the mealybugs traveled through the human vector. In Thailand the mealybugs are threatening to destroy a big part of their crop that is exported to 60% of the world.
So now man has come up with introducing a wasp that lays its eggs on the mealybug thereby killing them. My take is that it may work since crop and bugs were introduced by man.
In the meantime, scientists are getting creative in ways to fight invasive species.
