In the era when Yahoo! and AOL ruled the internet, Google was just born. Users, then, was enjoying a fast university internet connection and using both Alta Vista and Yahoo! as their main search engine. But those days are long gone and over, as Google has now become the number one search engine on the planet.
Any idea why Google and what is Google all about? Well, Google was originally named BackRub in 1996, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin were still studying at Stanford University. After a while, they re-evaluated the name BackRub in favor of Google. Google, in case you don't know, is a play on the mathematical figure, "googol," which represents the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. The name Google embodied the company's mission to create an infinite amount of Web resources.
Today, Google became a household name that, more often than not, is used as a verb, like when you're asking a question and the person you're asking doesn't know the answer, the response you usually get is, "Google it."
Furthermore, Google now has more than 1 billion unique visitors a year. Google also has a 90 percent share of the global internet search market. It now also owns several companies, products and services, most notably YouTube and the Android-platform market.
Google first registered Google.com on September 15, 1997. The company was incorporated on September 7, 1998 after it received its first $100,000 funding from Andy Bechtolsheim, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems.
