How permanent is permanent?

March 16th 2007 03:40
We regularly read about permanent hair removal, but is this really what you get?

There is no such thing as ‘permanent hair removal’ but the growth can be stunted and maintained over a period of time. You need at least 3 sessions to know if laser hair removal will work for you. Most treatments take 4-8 sessions.
smoother approach

Laser hair removal is very lucrative to the Beauty Industry.
I have known people who have spent thousands of dollars on laser hair removal. A friend for example paid $3000 up front to have his back treated at discounted rates. This works out to be about eight treatments every 6-8 weeks at approx $380 per session, (which is relatively cheap in comparison to some places that can charge up to $700 per treatment for a back) Not happy with his results, and unable to get a refund, he refused to spend anymore on laser treatments and now has his back waxed.
A lady, who won a competition, entitling her to have one year worth of hair removal treatments by laser, had lived with ‘ape’ hair on her body since adolescence. She just wanted to feel feminine; she wanted the hair gone forever. Even as a prime candidate with the very dark hairs that covered her arms, legs and face, laser hair removal failed in her eyes leaving her to despair. Her expectations were not reached although the treatment had reduced some, not all of her body hair.

Laser hair removal will only work on dark follicles (not hairs). To check this, tweeze out a hair and lay it on a white tissue, then look at the bulb that the hair is growing from and see whether it is dark or not. As the sun is attracted to a black tee-shirt drying on the clothes line, more so than a white tee-shirt, the laser light is attracted to dark hair follicles. The laser will not work on blonde, gray or light coloured hair. For those with light coloured hair, electrolysis is an option, and like laser hair removal you will need to be committed for a positive result and continue treatments over a period of at least one year.

Prior to laser treatment you are advised not to tweeze or wax as this will remove the follicles needed to be treated by laser light, but you can shave. For a woman wanting to have her upper lip treated the thought of shaving her face can be devastating.

If you find after three treatments that you notice NO change in hair growth then it is not working for you. Either the operator has not synchronised the machine to your hair type and skin colour (Fitzpatrick scale) accordingly or you are one of the unlucky ones that has light coloured hair follicles.

The results of laser hair removal vary. It has a 50/50 success rate. Even with successful treatments you still require on going maintenance at least once every 6-12 months for the rest of your life, and this is not within everyone’s budget.

You often see the before and after shots portraying a half hairy back on one side and a smooth soft surface on the other. Did you know that to achieve the photo portraying the smooth half it is shaved before treatment, then sometimes photographed, to give you the impression that the laser works after x amount of treatments!

Cut your losses and quit before your bank balance goes into the red. Or maybe, just maybe, you might be one of the lucky ones.

So you want a BRAZILIAN WAX?

March 13th 2007 22:05
So you want to know more about a Brazilian wax, curious, but too afraid to ask? Read on further and put your mind to rest.

Brazilian waxing has been around for thousands of years in some form or another. It is only in the past few years, especially since programmes like Sex in the city that Brazilian waxing has increased in popularity amongst men and women of all ages.

How do you choose a reputable operator? Word of mouth, word of mouth, word of mouth. This way you know for a fact that you will be with a competent Beauty Therapist who is experienced in Brazilian styled waxing and your friend will be held to ransom.
When making your appointment ask how long will it take and what type of wax is used for this treatment. The Therapist will use either hot or strip wax. I would recommend hot wax over strip wax. It sets like candle wax and when cooled is quickly pulled off in small strips. It warms the skin up first, helping to open each follicle, for easier, smoother hair removal. The other option is strip wax. The wax has a consistency to honey. Spread by disposable spatula onto the desired area; a strip of fabric is pressed on top and then ripped away leaving the area hairless. Strip wax is great for larger areas e.g. legs, backs, arms. Time wise it is also fast. Hot wax is much kinder to the skin and you. The Therapist should always wear disposable gloves, for the health and safety of you and others. A disposable g-string should be offered and a towel draped over you for personal comfort.

If it is your first Brazilian wax you will be nervous. We always fear the unknown. Trim your hair back to at least 1 cm, this way, the hair is not intertwined pulling from all directions. The waxing is fast by an experienced operator, but it can be painful to some people. Everyone’s thresh hold is different. Panodol built up over a few hours prior to this treatment helps to ease the pain or Emla cream bought from the chemist (about $18 for a small tube) numbs the area. Emla cream must be applies at least an hour before treatment. A Brazilian wax should take anywhere from 20 minutes to 45 minutes. After treatment, a soothing cream should be applied, the therapist should check first for allergies before applying the lotion. Lavender, tea tree or aloe Vera based products are most commonly used. You will remain red, (plucked chicken affect) in the area for a couple of hours. It may be tender for the first day.
If you are getting married or wanting to romantically surprise someone, best you get waxed a couple of days earlier. After care instructions should always be advised. You will require a repeat wax approximately every 4-7 weeks depending on your hair growth. The result is clean, free and fresh. They often say once you try a Brazilian wax you’ll never go back to your old ways.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

March 12th 2007 05:02
In to my Beauty Clinic walked Helen. She was wearing an RM Williams shirt and jeans. The first impression she gave me was 'Rich Bitch' and inkling told me that no matter how good the treatment performed, it would not be good enough, she would be paying too much and she'd want some freebies!
Confirming her appointment and asking her to take a seat, Helen nodded and responded with a mouth so full of plums they were dropping and plopping to the floor everywhere. I was so taken aback with this heinous accent that it took awhile for me to put her name and face together. Then I clicked. Boldly I asked her this question “Did you go to Sacred Heart Girls’ college”? Then came the long silence. “Yursssss” The plums now turning to jam. I knew it. Busted.

When and where do we acquire these accents on the transition from youth to adult hood?
When and where do we learn these tones we used to portray an image we want others to believe? I can't recall any kid in my class speaking with tones of 'ra, ra, ra’ i.e. 'Oh darling, I’d love to come over and play. Let me check with mummy, just in case we are booked for the weekend'. (Finished with an air kiss on each cheek then back again to the first) ‘Or in the case of the happy camper, (said with a slight lisp and waving of the loose wrist) 'That is so flattering and absolutely fabulously gorgeous on you. I see Joanne has one just like that. But you and I know doll that hers fake.’

The image portrayed by Helen was a good impersonation, but she was an impostor. It wasn’t the expensive clothes but this acquired accent and pronunciation of words that threw me way off the track. Her new found accentuation on words was a far cry from the Helen James I remembered from school with the broad kiwi accent.
Next time you are out and about take a look around. You may want to eaves drop into the conversation next to you. Amazing the lengths people go to impress their company with including the use of well rounded vowel tones.
