India Beat England

September 4th 2007 12:39
India broke their losing streak with a 38-run victory in the fifth one-day international in the seven-match series in Leeds on Sunday.

Sachin Tendulkar (71) and Yuvraj Singh (72) were their best and helped India to put up a commanding 324 for 6 in the rain-curtailed match . As per Duck worth-Lewis chart England had to score 311 in 45 overs after the target was revised due to successive rain-interruptions.England however, ended up with 242 for 8 in 39 overs, well below the required 280, when the rains forced a halt to the proceedings.

Sourav Ganguly after scoring 59 runs picked the two vital wickets of Matt Prior and Ian Bell and was declared "Man Of The Match".

England were reduced to 104 for 4 in the 16th over, when players went off the field after the second of three stoppages. Paul Collingwood seems to be enjoying his role as the captain of England and he has injected the fighting spirit that was missing earlier .Matt Prior and Ian Bell scored at fast pace that made Indians jittery at one stage . Collingwood kept the hope of his team alive and scored a brilliant 91 not out. England however, ended up with 242 for 8 in 39 overs, well below the required 280, when the rains forced a third and final halt to proceedings.

England in the morning had won the toss and put India to bat, which looked a smart move as the condition was perfect for Seam bowling.Indian openers were looking uncomfortable and could manage just seven runs from the first 5 overs. Tendulkar took nine balls to get off the mark but exploded in the sixth over of the innings, taking four boundaries off Jonathan Lewis. Saurabh Ganguly too caught on the spirit, taking the aerial route to deposit Anderson for boundaries. Gautam Gambhir was included in this match in place of R.P.Singh and he seized the opportunity and came up with a valuable 51 at number three.Gautam featured in a useful 94-run stand with Yuvraj.Yuvraj Singh took the English bowling by the scruff of its neck and hit 10 fours and two sixes.Rahul Dravid and M.S.Dhoni scored quickly too .

India need to win both the remaining matches to win the series and considering the strength and fire power India possesses it can be possible. The biggest weakness of this Indian team has been their pathetic fielding. In this match too,as many as six simple catches were dropped.Ian Bell could have been out first ball itself.

After loosing the fourth Match the team was in tremendous pressure. The historic Test Series win was forgotten and suddenly Senior Players were being attacked.According to Indian fielding Coach Robin Singh "the extreme criticism have affected negatively to some players and have made them so conscious that they try too hard and as a result make mistakes".There would be many who would contradict this view but unnecessary hype and criticism by former players look certainly overboard. The situation has reached thus far because all and sundry ex-players nowadays have been able to secure gainful employment as Cricket Expert and reasons best known only to them, are unusually very harsh towards the team. They invent some or other reasons to criticise the players and the team on any pretext. They never bother to peek into their own Cricketing accomplishments.

It is said that the former alrounder Madan Lal would move toward leg side leaving the stumps open while he toured West Indies when fearsome-foursome fast bowlers were in the West Indies team.It is alleged that Sachin Tendulkar was so much annoyed with the unprofessional attitude of Nayan Mongia that he refused to play alongside with him and that led to the end of Mongia.Ashok Malhotra, Kirti Azad and others too got opportunities but failed miserably. They are among the innumerable experts who never miss any opportunity to rip off the players of the stature of Sachin,Saurabh and Rahul .On the other hand Great players like Sunil Gavashkar,G.vishwanath always measure their words before speaking out.

Sachin after the loss of fourth one day gave dressing down to the players. He was so frustrated that he could not sleep that night .It is said that when Dinesh Kartik tried to clarify saying that the both Ravi Bopara and Stuart Broad played really well.Sachin questioned why it happens every time against India only;why not against Australia? Those who have played the game should be logical and not be as emotional as any lay person who expects the team to win each and every game.
