Plasma Vs LCD

October 9th 2006 10:55
Plasma Vs LCD
Screen Vs Screen
The contentious Plasma versus LCD battle has surely engrossed your lounge room, group of friends or during a verbal battle with your fellow work mates. After much debate one will intelligently choose the plasma while another will move wisely towards an LCD. One can quite easily make the blunder in thinking both screens are quite similar due to their physical similarities, unfortunately that couldn’t be further than the truth.

Plasma screens use a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create an image. While an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is basically a whole lot of Liquid Crystal blocks bunched up and jammed between two glass plates, images are created by varying the amount of electrical charge to the crystals. Both types of technology have been widely accepted by the public while alternate views have been formed as to which form of technology one should choose.

Of the two, a plasma is known to have better contrast due to its ability to project deeper blacks, plasma screens also provides better viewing angles, however LCD screens are improving in that area with the release of more and more LCD panels. LCD screens can also blur up during ‘fast moving’ scenes such as a car chase etc. Size is also a big factor with both styles of TV. A plasma screen can be up to 62 inches wide while an LCD will usually cut out at about 42 inches wide. The principal advantage a plasma TV has over its smaller contender is price, an LCD is generally more expensive across all sizes.

There are also excellent advantages in buying an LCD, an LCD is a lot lighter than a plasma panel and although LCD screens are generally pricier they will save a lot more energy than a plasma, an LCD can save a household up to 30% more. From a consumer perspective its other major benefit is its life span, as LCD is guaranteed to last up to 60,000 hours, while the early plasmas were known to only last up to 20,000 hours. Since the early days plasmas have improved significantly to allow for a longer lifespan of between 30,000 and 60,000 hours.

After comparing both screens it’s hard to pick an outright winner. Although some may debate otherwise in my opinion a plasma screen is suited to larger viewing audiences or the cinema type environment. An LCD in comparison is far more conventional and practical due its money saving prowess. It really does depend on the buyer and what he or she is looking for in a TV, in concluding buy the TV that is most suited to your budget and personal space.

The Embarrasing Truth

October 8th 2006 08:53
This week has again marked a sad day in the U.S. A crazed gunman walked into an Amish school and killed 5 innocent school girls, the motives behind the shooting are unapparent as they usually are but it was an obvious attack on a group of victims who live in the purest of societies. The Amish are a people who like to seclude themselves from the daily grind in a colony environment where basic needs like a TV are simply not a necessity.

If one was to research the shooting for some information on how this guy approached his prey, the evidence is pretty damning. He was carrying three guns, a shotgun, a rifle and a semi-automatic not to mention he had 600 rounds of ammunition sitting in his car!! What is the guy down the street doing with that much ammo?? He’s ready for a war not 5 young children who live in an Amish community. I have never been to the U.S and live in a society where you can go for a walk at night without feeling threatened. I’m assuming Pennsylvania and that particular rural town must be quite dangerous.

To me its sounding warning bells on the crazy gun laws they have in the country. If you look back over the years and the number of shootings that have taken place in schools, shopping centres and the like, one has to question the severity of guns and the lack of accountability from members of the community. In 2003 there were 11,920 Homicides in the U.S (State Illinois Council against Handgun Violence) while 80 million people own a gun which is absurd when the population of the country is 295 million, almost one third of the nation carries a firearm.

The stem of the problem starts with the leaders of the country, gun and rifle associations happen to provide a lot of the funding for political parties across the nation, labelling the problem as incurable unless the leaders of these parties start condemning the use of guns. In a society full of violence this would be a practical solution considering the amount of violent attacks from members of the general population. They’re not breeding an army but a culture where firearms are dominating their existence.

Stats on School Shootings since 1997

The Consummate Professional

September 22nd 2006 02:26
Sachin @ cricinfo
"Playing off his pads"

Stars are born not made. They have the unique ability to master a sport, an art or even a skill. One such star is Sachin Tendulkar. Although admired for his craftsmanship within a cricketing arena, people sometimes forget to understand the preparation and the durability of such a star. Sachin is a consummate professional, he practices for hours and devotes him self to the one thing he adores, his life is cricket.

If only you and I were able to direct our most concerted efforts to the things we love. That is solemn the difference between stardom and mediocrity. Sachin has just returned to the world game after an injury that has plagued his return for the past year. He is continually being written off and labelled unfit to play the game he has mastered. How can the general population be so easily persuaded to believe such fickle rumours?? I acknowledge that he is coming to the end of an outstanding career however it is extremely unlikely for a man of his integrity to bow out without a fight.

There are few sportspeople around the world who are idolised the way Sachin has been for the past 17 years of his cricketing life. He has carried the burden of Indian cricket since he first debuted as a young 16 year old. He has since amassed the support of a billion passionate Indians who live and breathe his every move. He has conquered the pressure, the reliance of playing for his country with every calculated innings.

Since returning to world cricket Sachin has again silenced his critics with another graceful but calculated return to world cricket in the DLF Cup played in Malaysia. He was always going to fire, it was just a matter of timing for such people are born with the talent to entertain combined with a willingness to succeed. Even to the neutral observer Sachin is a graceful batsmen who makes the art of batting look quite effortless but to those who are stars, people like Tiger Woods, Michael Schumaker and Roger Federer to name a few, will realise the burden of such a gift.

Stars like Sachin only come around ‘once in a blue moon’, I therefore encourage cricket lovers, sports lovers and critics around the world to acknowledge and cherish his efforts as his innings comes to a close. He undoubtedly deserves to leave the game at the same dizzy heights as an Andre Agassi or a Steve Waugh. He is the consummate professional and he will continue to practice, prepare and deliberate as thought it were his first match.

The Aftermath

September 16th 2006 06:56

Another night, another time and once again we sit and stare at the empty room that sits before us during the aftermath of a drinking session we’d like to forget. Hangovers! Everyone gets them, some deny them and some embrace them

Big Bad Darell

September 15th 2006 06:58
Back in the 90’s when Darell Hair called Muralithiran for ‘chucking’ as it’s been named since. Cricket lovers were bemused and a little disheartened because Darrell could have ended the career of one the greatest finger spinners the world has ever seen. ‘Murali’ is now an exceptional bowler with a less than untarnished reputation.

Well big bad Darell is back in a big way and continues to wither in a controversial twist. In a recent test match his treatment of a Pakistan side led by Inzamam Ul Haq was deplorable. Once more an International cricket side was led off by its captain due to a conscious decision made by Hair. Let’s put the ball tampering incident to a side and let’s get to the absurd letter Hair wrote to the ICC demanding $500 thousand dollars. Oh no Darryl what have you done this time

Tactical Genius- September 11

September 15th 2006 03:03
This week has once again refreshed our memories of September 11 five years ago. A day that captivated audiences around the world, it was the day the world's super power was infiltrated by Al Qaeda, led by a relatively unknown by the name of Osama Bin Laden.

Five years on, one can't but still admire the thought process behind Osama’s grand plan to take on the U.S. ‘Yes’ it was cruel and 'yes’ thousands of innocent lives were impacted, totally one hundred percent agreed. It was a violent attack on U.S soil, something that cannot be tolerated. Yet why does one sit back and try to understand the plot, was it a plot or mass murder
