In God We Trust. Not?

July 15th 2009 00:14
So here we go again. Another group complaining about "In God We Trust" and The Pledge of Allegiance being posted on Capitol Visitor Center in Washington. Here's what they say...

The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation's lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in western Wisconsin, claims the taxpayer-funded engravings would be an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.

And you know what? I totally agree with them. Now before my fans, if i have any of those yet think I have completely lost my mind and need to be shot. Let Me explain. Despite the fact most public officials take an oath not only to the office they are presiding over but to God as well to uphold that office for which they serve it seems odd to me this would even be an issue. Is the next step to remove the swearing in and replace it with- I _______swear to Uphold the Office of _________, maybe if I feel like it. I don't know just throwing it out there. However we have not addressed the claim that this foundation made and they deserve a rebuttal. There claim is that its unfair that non-religious taxpayers would have to foot the bill for this addition to the court house.

Ok that's fair we do live in a socialist democracy but last I checked will of the majority ruled. That's how the judges in the court got elected right either directly or indirectly. So if the majority says hey this is a bad idea to put that on there I'm all for it. However that's not what happened. Here's what the article says.

The resolution came in response to critics who complained Congress spent $621 million on the new three-story underground center without paying respect to the nation's religious heritage. The center opened in December after years of construction.

Oh ok I see. So then the people raised the question of rather it should be on there and they passed a resolution. Why did not the atheist or other religious bodies protest this resolution? Why does an independent foundation have to come in and do it for them? Thank God someones there to protect there rights, Even if they didn't feel they were being violated. The article further goes on to say.

"In God We Trust" has been the national motto since 1956 and has appeared on U.S. currency since 1957.

The lawsuit says both the motto and the words "under God" in the pledge were adopted during the Cold War as anti-communism measures. Engraving them at the entrance to the U.S. Capitol would discriminate against those who do not practice religion and unfairly promote a Judeo-Christian perspective, it says.

Members of Congress who supported the measure swiftly denounced the lawsuit.

"This lawsuit is another attempt by liberal activists to rewrite history and deny that America's Judeo-Christian heritage is an essential foundation stone of our great nation," said Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.

Rep. Daniel Lungren, R-Calif., said he was expecting a lawsuit but called the claims "patently absurd."

The foundation also is challenging the constitutionality of the National Day of Prayer in federal court.

Could God also be Buddha , Krishna, Allah, etc... depending on your point of view. I mean realistically all Americans know that the God that's referred to is the Judeo-Christian God. But the foundations only defense was for the atheist and non religious. They further go on to state they think the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional. Well if that's the case maybe we should re look at all the holidays that are recognized. I've worked for alot of major companies and not once did I ever here of an atheist not wanting to have the day off for Christmas or turning down, again God forbid a Christmas Bonus!! While as a Bible believing Christian I acknowledge these holiday have there base in pagan religions and I don't personally celebrate them I still enjoy the time off from work.

What it comes down to I think is it's time to let the people decide what they want on there courthouse since as the foundation eloquently put it the paid for it and further more no one else complained. Thanks for taking the time to read this, maybe our next topic can include removing all the Masons out of public office and removing the Masonic symbols off our buildings and our currency. What do you think Would love to hear from you. God Bless

You're taking the argument to the other extreme, aren't you? And it appears rather childish.

Why not include the argument that swearing by God can be optional, as it is here in Australia. If you're religious, you can swear by God - if not, you just make an affirmation.

Including the words, "maybe if I feel like it" only biases your article and makes it difficult to take seriously.

BTW, you are mis-spelling "there" . .

There claim is that its (it's) unfair that non-religious . . .

. . .these holiday have there base ...

. . . they want on there courthouse since as . . .

It should be "their" - a possessive adjective.

And 'here' is incorrect also.

. . .And "not once did I ever here of an . . ."
should be - "hear"

This may seem a tad critical, but you will gain more credibility if you spell correctly - for if your spelling is incorrect, what about the article's content?

Hazius you are absolutely correct. Unfortunately I posted this before I decided to edit it. So thanks for pointing out the corrections.
As to the point of your post. that is is exactly what i was trying to point out how childish the argument was. The place for them to argue it was when the resolution was being passed, not to have some group come in later to defend people who weren't complaining to begin with. Thanks for the post. Alex
