I'm The Lyrical Jessie James: Songs of the 90s
January 10th 2008 05:34
I was reading an article online regarding 90s music. The author proposed that radio stations may look to the 90s for the latest format for "nostalgic" listening for their 20-40 year old listeners. Then I watched the VH1 I love the 90s series. So it got me to thinking: What songs from the 90s do I adore (besides the usual Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Beck, Collective Soul, REM etc...)
Live: I Alone
Edward Kowalczyk is a powerhouse singer who at one time was one pissed off vegetarian who loved the Lord. He was quoted to have said that this video made him "look crazy" but he thought it was "cool anyway."
Marcy Playground: Sex and Candy
Great song created by a group named after an actual school playground in Minneapolis. The "fight song" of of sex addicts everywhere.
Dee LIte: Groove is in the heart
How do you say De Groovy? I wanted to be Lady Miss Kier. The colorful costumes and videos of Deee-Lite were very distinctive by bringing back the style of the 60's and 70's vibe into actual music and fashion with dance forward music
President of the US: Peaches
One of my favorite songs of the 90s. Love the whimsy and the double entendre. Not suprising Chris Ballew lead singer of the band writes soundtrack nusic for the porn industry. The band is working on another album (Yippee for me!) Very fun in concert btw.
Third Eye Blind: Semicharmed life
What a peppy song about drugs and sex. Sung by moms in mini-vans worldwide who had no idea what the lyrics actually said. Also used in commercials to hawk all kinds of products[LINK=http://www.lyricsfreak.com/t/third eye blind/semicharmed life_20136744.html]See for yourself/LINK]
Counting Crows: Mr Jones
Got to give props to a nice Jewish guy with extensions who gets a lot of play with the ladies (I guess it's true that gals like to date a "fixer upper")
House of Pain: Jump Around
Love me some Everlast... it is also featured as Catalina's pole dance music in the NBC comedy My Name is Earl.
Snap: The Power
Guilty pleasure deluxe. How can anyone not dance to this 90s favorite?
Sinead O'Connor: Nothing Compares 2 U
Cueball's politics aside.... Don't judge me but I Love this hypnotic song.
Lisa Loeb: Stay
Guys do make passes at girls who wear glasses. She is the poster girl for geek chic
Duncan Sheik: Barely Breathing
Hot Dude named after a condom what's not to like? Yes I am that shameless.

Flashes of memories
oooh great walk down memory lane! I think 'Mr Jones' will be on my top 20 songs of all times... for all time!
I used to dig a bit of Coolio and East 17... and Roxette... and these thee Spanish guys who never sang anything in English... but I was a teen and they were hot and that was all that mattered!
great post!

Mum's Word
I Alone was one song that literally grabbed me by the shoulders, shook me and said LISTEN TO ME! What a fantastic song....what a fantastic band.
Groove is in the Heart - bit of dancing indulgence there
Mr Jones - my goodness, my friend played this song 24 hours day 7 days a week for what seemed like an eternity. Unfortunately I can't listen to that song the same way.
Presidents - first album is brilliant
This is a great list.
Alanis Morrisette is another one for me.
You Oughta Know - wow. The first time I heard this song I thought, 'how did this chick get inside my head, grab my thoughts and write this song.'
Love & stuff

Then I picked up my first guitar and the late 90s was all about rock - Live, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Collective Soul, Metallica....
Oh-oh.... I'm getting nostalgic... gotta go...
