One, Little Secret

I've come to the conclusion that being healthy is about one thing: habit. After all, its not like life is going to slow down long enough for you to focus entirely on going to the gym and drinking more water. In fact, Murphy's law means that it will most likely speed up the moment you decide to try.

How's this for a perfect example - the week after I started this blog, I landed my dream job driving black thunder at 104.7 FM. Fantastic job, been wanting it for years and god damn do I bloody love it. The only problem is that with two jobs to juggle, my Mount Franklin water bottle quota has gone from a decent four bottles a day to one.

While contemplating the best way to solve this dilemma, I realised that if drinking water was as easy as brushing my teeth, this wouldn't be a problem. The answer as to why I brush my teeth without dwelling on it but agonise over guzzling water is habit. It's subconscious. Formed all those years ago when my mum told me to do it or else I'll look like a hillbilly. Now while I'm happy to report that my teeth are doing fine, it would be nice to consume the recommended dosage of H20 each day without stressing about it. That's what we're going for here people - maximum results with minimum effort. We're lazy folks with hectic lives and the less stuff we have to consciously think about, the better.

Am I right?

Of course I am.

But how do I turn something that is frankly a pain in the arse, into a nice, easy habit I hear you ask?

Well, for that you'll need one month, a tiny bit of motivation and plenty of phone reminders. From what I can tell, it takes 30 days to create a new habit or to re write an old one. The good news is that if you can keep it up, day in, day out for one month then it will become automatic. Isn't that awesome! One month worth of bother and pain for a lifelong healthy habit? I'm down for that (Hint: if, like me, you have the memory of a goldfish with dementia, then for the love of god put at least 3 daily reminders in your phone.)

The key here is not to get over excited and try to change all your filthy habits at once. No one is asking you to complete a triathlon or quit smoking, just drinking 6 bottles of water each day. That's it. Just six. Once that habit is well and truly embedded in your subconscious, then you can move on to the next one. If it takes more than one month, then so be it. We're not trying to run a race here. If we want off the list of people who say "I want to get healthy" every new years, then this process is going to take some time. But do it once, do it right, and you won't have to think about it again. Ever.

The best part is, you don't even have to think about what habits you should be adopting! That's my job. Start with good old H20, and let me know how y'all go.

The Good Stuff

August 8th 2010 21:52
My journey to easy health started this week and already I have learned one very important lesson: I hate drinking water out of a glass. Really. I have no idea why but it really does bug me quite a bit. This seams a strange reaction to have as it's a most civilised habit, yet the bogan in me prefers a dodgy plastic Mount Franklin bottle. How bizarre that something as insignificant as glass vs bottle could have an effect on how much water I drink each day. It's a decent difference too. In fact, I drink up to 1 litre more with said bottle than I do with said glass. 1 litre, dude. That's the difference between a well hydrated woman and a girl with water retention.

Ok, yes, in the grand scheme of things this revelation doesn't seam that important. It's not like I've just discovered the wheel. But when you're a lazy girl trying to squeeze every bang out of your health buck, every little trick counts. Especially when it comes to the difficult task of consuming 2-3 litre's each day. Most of us can freely admit that we only drink when we're absolutely dying of thirst, and the rest of the time coffee and beer does just fine. But if you want a fast, easy and painless way of shedding a few kilos then drinking water is a habit well worth adopting . H2O is essential for a good metabolism, better digestion and as a bonus, it even helps break down stored body fat.

Woot!

Mind you, when you consider that our bodies are roughly 70% water, keeping yourself hydrated makes sense. And if that's not enough motivation for you, consider this. Dry skin looks older than healthy, well-hydrated skin because a) the wrinkles appear sooner and b) they are much more noticeable.

There. If the combination of losing weight and looking younger doesn't have you running for the tap, then I think you're living in the wrong society. It's not hard to fit some more hydration into your day, either. Make a habit of drinking one glass (or one 600ml bottle if you're a freak like me) first thing in the morning, or just before breakfast. Rinse and repeat for lunch and dinner as well. Trust me on this one - water is an excellent appetite suppressant. You'll eat less and feel fuller between meals. Keep a supply within reach at your desk too, as sipping throughout the day will stop you from dehydrating.

Oh, and expect to pee more. Lots, lots more. A little birdie tells me this is because we both need more fiber in our diets, but we'll get to that later.

Lazy. Healthy. (No, really!)

July 31st 2010 07:01
Welcome to the lazy person's guide to weight loss. The blog where you and I will discover if it's possible to enjoy the benefits of good health while still leading a normal life. Yes, that includes all the naughty, fun stuff that society shoves in our faces while simultaneously telling us that we shouldn't indulge. This inevitably leads to those spurts of motivation that make us sign up for a new exercise program or swear that tomorrow we will eat more veggies. But once the enthusiasm lapses, then we're back at square one.

Until next time.

I don't know about you, but I've had this problem for years. It's not through low self esteem, ignorance or bad body imagine. The simple fact is that I'm a busy woman with a love of beer and a tendency to be very lazy. The last thing I want after a hard day at the office is some vitamins and a diet shake while I puff away on the treadmill. I'm more inclined to go for a VB and a cigarette. However, since I don't want to be greeted with the words "heart disease" on my thirtieth birthday either, I think the time has come to find a happy medium.

And its not all bad - increased energy, concentration, and productivity, not to mention better brain power and overall hotness are all benefits of loving the veg. So what do you say? Are you ready to eat cake and flash hot thighs at the same time? I know I am!
