Stupidity In The Form Of Laziness
March 30th 2011 13:47
Okay, this morning's latest episode of stupidity comes to us in the form of laziness. Here, like many communities with a number of elementary schools, parents are expected to provide transportation for their children because no one lives more than a mile from the school. Most of the kids are allowed to walk or ride thier bike to and from school. Of course, this means a lot of foot and bike traffic to maneuver around for the parents that choose to drive their children to the school.
Now, I realize that, for parents that work, being expected to find a way for their children to get to school may be a bit of a challenge. However, there are so many older children in the neighborhood that could walk younger children to school and children whose mothers do not work that no one should have a problem finding someone willing to help them out. I know of several families that car pool thier children to school and even more that arrange for all of their children to walk or ride bikes to school in large groups.
To me, it seems like common sense that no child should be allowed to navigate streets, even in a resdiential area, by themselves at a time when there is naturally more traffic than usual. However, this is especially true for younger children. Perhaps I am simply an overprotective parent, but accidents can happen anywhere at any time, and there is safety in numbers.
Okay, on to the specifics of the stupidity of this morning. While outside with my dogs this morning, I was listening to all of the kids talking and laughing on their way to school. Then, a short while after all of the other children had passed through the area, I saw a small child (maybe 5 or 6) with a backpack. This child was riding his TRICYCLE to school!
Maybe it is just me, but if your child is still riding a tricycle, there is a very good chance that he should not be navigating the streets by himself. Now, I know that I do not know the whole story behind this episode, but I cannot imagine being too lazy to either take my small child to school or arrange for someone to go with him. For pete's sake, you can stick your head out the door on any given morning and see several groups of kids that would likely be more than willing to let your child walk or ride with them. All you need to do is open your door and your mouth and ask.
