I Just Don't Get It: Portal

Portal, that was one fun game. It was puzzle after puzzle for a couple of hours. It was clever, fun, and had a sarcastically dry sense of dark humor. What I do not get is what is so damn funny about cake! I just don't get it, mention cake to a portal fan and they crap themselves. Why?
To be fair, the writings on the walls were darkly amusing when they said "the cake is a lie." However, the overall theme of the cake is that there is a goal to be reached, and the scribbling suggest there is nothing at the end of the tunnel. It is notion that you are trapped, but I am not here to discuss literary elements in games (that is for another time).
Also, I do not get the companion cube. Why should I feel anything for it? It looks like all the other cube, save for the hearts all over it. It weighs the same as the others, and can be carried like the others. Why should I feel anything about that steel box? I literally did nothing when I incinerated it, it was a tool to get the job done. Why does everyone who has played or loved the game talk about it so much? I felt more when I hurt the turrets then I did when I incinerated the companion cube. Also, why are there plush toys for it?
I liked the game, it was a nice breath of fresh air in the FPS genre. The subtle humor and small development team feel made it stand out greatly. I don't like the fans. I just don't get the humor behind the "cake" and why should I give a damn about a silent steel box with some pink on it?
