Hurricane Paloma
November 9th 2008 21:26
Well, its that time again when Cayman Islands has the potential of being devastated by another hurricane. Fortunately, it seems that Hurricane Paloma is probably going to be a category 2 hurricane, which is pretty severe but not as severe as Hurricane Ivan as I understand it. Although the hurricane is expected to hit Grand Cayman on Saturday 8 November, early in the morning (1 a.m, I believe) all businesses were closed by 10 am on Friday so that people had enough time to “bunker down” before the hurricane’s arrival. Even the wild chickens that normally roam freely on the roads of Grand Cayman seemed to have disappeared by Thursday afternoon. They seem to know when a storm is about to arrive, its almost as if Mother Nature warns them in advance, whereas we have to rely on sophisticated equipment, the internet, experts etc to prepare for the hurricane.
For me, the thing I find most annoying but possibly unavoidable is the panic buying that takes place when the island is placed on hurricane watch by the authorities. Gas had run out at most petrol stations by 8 pm on Thursday afternoon; I had to wait in a queue for about 1 hour before I was able to fill up my car. As for the supermarkets, they are a nightmare in terms of finding parking, queuing at the checkout counter and just general mayhem that accompanies any form of panic buying. Paloma is coming late in the hurricane season (which officially ends on 30 November) and I hope it will be the last one for this year. At least next week, we will be able to look forward to Pirates Week which is always so much fun.
