Authorities have decided to blow a stranded whale up in order to be rid of it. The humpback whale was caught stranded of Albany coast. It was 9.5 metres, and 12 tonnes. It was stranded in the Albany Princess Harbour on August 19. It was a mere 800 metres from the shore.
The sea mammal had explosives strapped to its head, which were set in order to destroy its cranium. The mammal did not die instantly, it's tail thrashed and it needed to be shot repeatedly in order to have it put down. It had two sets of explosives set to destroy it – one being set fifteen minutes after the first one had exploded. The reason for this was to decrease its threat to public safety.
