More on WHS later, especially after reading this article... WHS and Media Center Integration
I have a long way to go for what I would like to accomplish, but also on limited funds.

I've been thinking a lot about Usenet lately. What happened to it is the main question I have. I know most providers still have throttled speed access to it and there are newsfeed sites that allow a paid subscription.

The Fight Club theme seems to run on Usenet. "The First Rule of Usenet is you don't talk about Usenet." I think this is from the amount of illegal content on it. But there was at one time so much more to it.

I remember using it pre-WWW to buy and sell computer parts for my Amiga. Kind of like the origins of online marketplaces. I also remember using it to converse programming ideas back and forth. Get answers to coding questions. Read fan-fiction. Etc...

It seems like Usenet has gone the way of Gopher. It's almost too bad, because a part of me still misses it. Just like the MUDs I played in college, I will never return to them, but a part of me still yearns for that experience.

It's the old does technological progress always make us better? Or have we given up a piece of our soul in the process?

Upgrade? Not really.

April 22nd 2009 03:41
I moved my WHS motherboard and drives into an old case after the spower supply on the old one died. Why not just replace the power supply? Because I housed it in an old Gateway 300S computer originally. Once the PS died, I was not going to be able to fit a non Gateway one in. So I swapped all items into an old Frankenmachine case I had laying around from years ago that had a brand new 350W PS in it.

A little dremel work on the backplane was required to get it to all fit, but once that was done the entire effort was seemless. Everything is up and running again and my backups should resume at 3:00 am tonight.

Not out of the woods

April 20th 2009 14:42
Although I manged to get the PC I was having problems with fixed, I couldn't resist the urge to upgrade to a faster wireless card. Originally I was using a wireless G card which was obtaining 54 mbps connection, but since I have a wireless N router and my laptops are running around 130 mbps on it, I wanted to upgrade. I bought a Linksys WMP110 figuring this would do the trick.

After I installed the drivers and the card, the system locked up connecting to the network every time. I finally was able to get it going by killing the Logitech QuickCam software that was running. So after an uninstall of the QuickCam software the card was running fine at 65 mbps. Not as major an upgrade as I thought and now I have to figure out what to do about the camera.

I still have some work to do cleaning up the camera software and figuring out how to get it co-exist with the WMP110 card. Also, my WHS computer's power supply died over the weekend. Since it's been on for 3 years straight it has more than served it's purpose. Time to upgrade the case and power supply. I'll blog more on that experience as I do it.

Ongoing restore

April 19th 2009 16:55
The PC I need to repair had 3 GB of RAM installed as two 1 GB sticks in slots 1 and 2 and 512 MB sticks in slots 3 and 4. Praying for an easy solution I popped both 512 sticks out and rebooted. No BSOD after 2 hours of running. Yeah!!!!

So I'm off to the store to pick up replacement memory. I'm going to upgrade and replace the two 512 MB sticks with 1 GB sticks each. This will bring the total system memory to 4 GB which is the limit for Vista 32 bit. Now I'm pretty positive that only one of the 512 MB sticks is bad, but which one? Is it even worth the time and money to find out? I don't have another system to put it into and would hate to toss it out. So I guess I'll store both sticks for a future time when I happen across somebody who is in need.

PC Restore Day 2

April 19th 2009 14:45
Well, the restore from WHS worked like it was supposed to. I was back up and running after the restore CD did it's magic. However, it still did not fix the BSOD issues with the PC. So now it on to the eliminating hardware stages. The BSOD says "memory_management" error so I will start with the RAM. Since I have no extra RAM on hand and the machine sports 3 GB, I'll eliminate a stick at a time and reboot.

We'll see how it goes...

Restoring From the WHS restore CD

April 19th 2009 03:01
Well the time has finally come... I've been dreading the day for a while now. The kid's Vista PC has finally crashed. It is BSOD everytime you try to log in. I'm not sure what caused the issue, but thankfully I've been prepared since day 1 with this computer.

I was on the early beta programs for Windows Home Server and while I saw the need for the PC backup portion of the software, that was not the "coolness" factor for me. I was way more interested in the centralized and mirrored photos, music, and video parts. If we ever lost a hard disk - the media was still secure on another mirrored one. Just replace the bad hard drive and mozzy on your way. Needless to say, I never tested to the PC backups by restoring a full PC, I just thought it was a nice to have feature
