How much personal you can be in blogging?
Mostly, we’re talking professional blogging here, not personal diaries and journals, as oppose Orble’s regulation. While being a part of the blogosphere I think we should ask-How personal do professional bloggers need to be?
Topic
Writing about Travel in Hong Kong sure is different from giving tips on tech. Sometimes the topic will force you to be personal since it actually revolves around you and your view on things. So topic decides how personal you can be with your readers.
Blog’s business perspective
If you plan to sell or do business with your blog in the future then beware of getting too personal. A potential buyer will have a hell of a time taking it up after you if you’ve built a readership around yourself as a person and blogger. Needless to say, you’ll have less trouble finding a buyer to your blog if it’s easy to resume your work. You know business is business, emotion don’t count there.
Branding
Blogging can certainly get you work and influence. I’ve gotten numerous assignments and freelance works through my blog, and you too can if only if you play right. In my opinion it sure is easier to get this kind of spin-off from your blog if you have a more personal flare than too geeky or intellectual kind. Business comes when you are easily understandable.
Planning
What you want to do and what your plans are very important. And yes, you should have a plan, even for a small project that you run on the side. It doesn’t need to be so detailed but you should at least ask yourself what your goals are, who you want to attract with your blogging and if you’re doing it for the cash of for yourself (perhaps a bit of both there)? You should plans to reach your goals, don’t get personal if your goal is professionalism.
