afl opinion - by Chris Rayson

How Much Impact Will It Be?

November 17th 2006 10:26
This years draft is expected to be the best draft since the 2001 draft or maybe even the biggest and best draft ever.
Some names we have already taken in as potential stars are the likes of Gibbs, Gumbleton, Hanson, Luenberger and even Selwood, Jetta and Thorp aswell as the Brown brothers Nathan and Mitchell. These are players all expected to be taken well within the top 10 or 20 and we are probably expecting them to start their AFL careers next year and probably get NAB rising star nominations and maybe even win the award, we are also probably expecting some of these players to become future captains of their chosen clubs.

But the real question is that is this draft going to be the best draft ever seen, I mean we have had some great drafts in the past like the 2001 draft and the just recently seen 2004 draft where players are just starting to show off their talents. But we have also seen some really bad drafts aswell but is it all going to change from now on so lets hope that we see some great talent come out of the next few drafts to come and we see some really good careers too.

I came here thanks to your comment on my blog. I don't really know much about the AFL, but it does look like the draft if fairly important there compared to American sports. In baseball, high draft picks often play for years in the minor leagues before they make the big leagues, and when they do it's often for a different team. American Football's draft is more important, although those top picks usually don't play much for a year or two. Basketball seems to be the biggest deal - baseball and basketball both give rookie of the year awards but baseball's rookies usually were drafted several years beforehand but in the NBA there are usually plenty of successful 1st year players who were drafted a couple of months before their first season in the league.

The 2001 draft.....that's the one that Chris Judd and Luke Ball were part of wasn't it??? That year sounds familiar to me....but I could be confused!

Yes that was th draft that Ball, Judd and Hodge was in and it is considered one of the best drafts ever seen but their have also been drafts that are considered to be better like the 1997 draft. That had players like Johnstone, Ottens, Croad, Luke Power and it also has Brownlow Medelists like Simon Black and 2x medal winner Adam Goodes in it as well so that was a very good draft aswell.
