How can god exist?

July 8th 2009 06:56
The other morning a good friend of mine told me that she only recovered from her extended suffering with Glandular fever because 'god' helped her through it.

Don't get me wrong, people are allowed to believe in whatever they choose, there are plenty of people in the world that do believe in a higher power, believe someone watches over them in the time of need, looking out for them, protecting them and that trully is a lovely comforting thought.

However, how can anyone do this? How can anyone beleive in something that has no proof, no visible evidence, no anything, just archaic stories and scriptures. What is the value in wasting precious time and resources worshipping and praying to an omnipotent being that apparently hears and sees all.

When something goes wrong, the answer is always the same, either :
1. God is teaching us a lesson and punishing the wrongdoers
2. God didn't blow it up, but he was working in the hearts and minds of those who helped clean up.

OF COURSE HE WAS (OR SHE), who else would it be, god organised the mass evacuations, god put out the fires, god saved those who were injured.

How can people just expell energy and spend their lives hoping and believing, without any proof that results are gained?

As I said to my mother the day I renounced my faith,

"Prove to me God exists and I will believe"

Yeah, I've stopped believing in air. Can't see it, taste etc.etc. I feel these effects from something but I don't believe it's something called air.

Anyway, hope someone proves God's existence to you as I'm sure Jesus would disapprove of your attitude. LOL.

Air is a terrible example, you can feel air as it flows past u, feel it changed the temperature around you, feel it cool your office or your home, not to mention air is scientifically proven to exist, fairly obviously because we still breathe.

P>S Jesus and I are tight, he never dissaproves, besides I am JESUS right

If we're willing to open our eyes, we'll see the fingerprints of God all around us and all throughout us. Our very existence proves the existence of a Creator God

Yes, you're right, air is a terrible example. It was the first thing I thought of when thinking of things we can't see.

I think the issue may be in the word 'prove'. God has proved Himself to me over and over many times. As lollipop said, through His creation and our own lives as well as answered prayer (and sometimes unanswered prayer).

To only look for scientific proof narrows your options immensely with God. How can an omnipotent and omniscient being fit neatly into our own little human deductions?

The bridge that we travel to get to God is called faith, the door He opens is called forgiveness and He is the essence called love. Not one of them can be proven by science. And yet they all combine to uphold and give hope to people.

While alot of bad things have happened under the banner of religion, many, many wonderful actions have been done by humans in the name of Christ. What motivates these people? Certainly not science.

But you should know all this, being Jesus and all

Lollipop, I LOVE SISTER ACT, one of my fave movies of all time, but did not get me believeing in much besides the hilariousness of one ms whoopi.

As for this pile o' shit:
"If we're willing to open our eyes, we'll see the fingerprints of God all around us and all throughout us. Our very existence proves the existence of a Creator God"

WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? we see fingerprints of god all around us? where? how? what are you on about? And dont try feed me some crap about how the seasons changing, or a rainbow on a cloudy day are gods fingerprints cause I will throw up.

Samantha "the bridge that we travel to get to god is called faith", I have faith, faith in knowledge, faith that my partner will call me, faith that my pay check arrives every month, faith that I will type this and it press create comment and it will be posted. These things are tangiable, real things, real world experiences.

"he is the escence of love?" Do you even read what you write? I am baffled as to how a grown human being can believe some spirit thing answers all their prayers and is the escence of love!

Both comments just add to my concerns about god and religion, it's way to airy fairy, mumbo jumbo for my taste, thats for damn sure.

BUT SISTER ACT ROCKS

Firstly,
I'd like to recommend that you be a bit more respectful to Lollipop, myself AND whoever comes in here and bothers to not only read your blog but also have a conversation with you.

Comments like 'pile o'shit' and 'do you even read what you write?' are demeaning and immature to those of us who happen to have differing opinions to you.

Secondly,
What if the knowledge you thought you had let you down? Or your partner left you? Or you lost your job? What happens to your faith then? While tangible these things can also be transient.

I am a grown up and my guess is I have a few years on you, so I may be speaking more from MY experience than knowledge but I truly believe that God is always there for me - through the good and bad. I've seen prayers answered and I've met people who have done amazing things simply because of their faith in God.

I've done things that only my faith could have gotten me through simply because I felt God gave me the strength to do it.

Take care,
Sam

Samantha,

Your so right, not fair to be rude to anyone, accept my honest apology I get carried away and I AM DEF. Immature ! haha

Secondly, tangiable things are most cetainly transient, but they remain tangiable, if I lost my job I would know why I lost my job, it would be a real word experience, I would be spoken to, then fired, sign documents, its a real thing that occurs. I would know It happened, I would see it, hear it happen. God has nothing to do with it.

Granted you are older and would have certainly had more experiences, how does god grant your prayers? How does someones faith in god make them do great things? I have done work for several charities over my granted short life, some of them religion based, but I dont believe in god, nor any power he has to answer prayers. Can goodness not come out of the goodness of my own heart, the logic that helping others makes life easier for them, I know these are christian values but they are also just decent, human being, normal person values, god is not needed to do great things.

God is a hinderance , religion is a chore and since leaving the church, life has been easier, more enjoyable and far more successful.

MORGAN : They can have their faith till the cows come home, trust me its all theirs!! hahaha I would prefer to have my sickness treated and cured by a doctor, not by a prayer! GO EMPIRICISTS! I am nothing, even atheism requires doign stuff, and I hate doing anything to do with supporting a majority, unless its Apple, bring on the iphone, macbook and ipod YO! (random i know)

if you lack a belief in god and the afterlife you are an atheist by definition, it doesnt require you to do anything, its your absence of doing something (believing) that categorises you

Hi Jesus, (funny typing that!)
Your apology is gratefully accepted and ironically it shows a great sign of maturity...LOL!

In answer to your question as to how God answers my prayers I can only tell you by example. First one, my aunt had been given a diagnosis of possible bowel cancer and had to have an enema done and results tested (ewww!). She had been losing huge amounts of weight and drank like a fish so it wasn't looking good.

Of course first thing I did was pray. She's not a Christian but when I asked her if it was ok to pray for her she was happy for me to do it. (I think she would have looked for any help at that stage). Anyway, the results came back and she actually had a form of indigestion that could be fixed with medicine. I saw that as an answer to prayer and she actually rang and thanked me. We went from thinking her life was nearly over to a burp!!

I know you're probably thinking that's just a coincidence but that's the difference. I see God in the equation.

Yes of course and it does. There are many great and compassionate non-Christian people, sometimes even moreso than some Christians I know. But I would say, since God has made everyone in His image, that it is the godly side of Him coming out in them.

I have a question for you, what are your thoughts on what happens to you when you die? I'm always curious to know what people with different or no faith systems think...does it have anything to do with Apple or iphones??? LOL.

Take care,
Sam

Morgan, consider me an atheist then, but I am still not doing anything !

Sam,

Thanks for sharing your personal story, I get it, I get how belief in God can help you through tough times. And your right, the fact that you prayer in my eyes had nothing to do with it not being cancer, that was medicine, modern medicine that helped her and correctly diagnosed her.

Still, I can see the value of religion to your life.

As for god coming out in me, I get that you believe god created me in his image, but I am a human being that makes logical choices, god didnt tell me to sell red nose day badges, or have a charity raffle at work, I decided to do it to make my resume look better AND help out others, let me guess, god was part of the helping out others side of that statement, not the boosting my resume part?

As for the afterlife, death is the end, what could happen to me, i get burried or cremated, thats about the lot. The last thing I will ever see or do or experience is the last second I am alive. (which hopefully involves me using my latest i something apple product)
haha

Then I wish you the best J! The other thing I believe in is that God has given everyone free will to choose their life's path.

(obviously history shows that many regimes, religions and dictatorships try to limit that for some people)

I do know that God has shown so much love in my life that I am always willing to share that. Kind of like when you eat something reallly good you want everyone to have a try (unless it's chocolate, I don't share chocolate )

You asked the question in this post, one I couldn't resist typing an answer to.

Take care,
Sam
