Okay, so I had an appointment with the bank the other day, and let me just say, how incredibly UNprepared I was. I won't go into those details right now because this blog is not about my humiliation.

After the appointment, instead of licking my wounds I did some research. I found a whole bunch of mortgage calculators online that were really helpful in giving me an idea about my finances. For example, here is one mortgage calculator that helps with basic repayments for Australia.

After researching a bit more, I see there are a millions of calculators out there but this Your Mortgage one helped me the best. Gosh, next time I'll be a lot more prepared before going to a bank... I'm sure I'll reveal the details of my clueless discussion with the banker later (maybe when my hits are suffering more hehe)

Today I broke the news to my dad

“Dad, I’m going to get a mortgage”

He just about fainted with… delight? It was as if I had told him I was about to get married, or I just won the lottery. I think he’s just excited that I had decided to do something adult (considering I hadn’t left home until I was errr…. 24).

“Fantastic! This will mean solid budgeting! I’ll open Excel”

Oh dad… I guess it’s true what they say. You can take the statistician away from the calculator, but at the end of the day… he already has one built-in….

My mum was another story. “WHAT? Are you ready for this?” I sat her down and explained how I need shelter to survive. Then she offered to throw money at me, even though they aren’t even rich or anything. Awww… well I think I just made a crucial step towards my homeowning dream.

Mortgage = Deathgage

April 7th 2009 06:20
It was brought to my attention recently that “mort” in French means “death”! Considering I’ve just taken the first step to homeownership, you can imagine how delighted I was.

Consequently, I see that the first actually step to homeownership is ‘admitting you have a problem’. Oh, wait.. that’s alcohol addiction. The concept of having a mortgage is hard to get your head around

Morgages Are Hard!

April 6th 2009 04:23
Hi everyone, I've just started down the bumpy road to homeownership.

After all those comforting ads on TV with the smartly dressed woman in a suit telling me not to be afraid of bankers, you think I’d be feeling at ease about the whole process. Well, you’re wrong
