Hope

One of my favourite books is "Hope in the Dark", by Rebecca Solnit (Cannongate Books, 2005). I keep it within reach and grasp for it at times when I need to be reminded that there is hope, rather than feeling like the world and its people are lost, and nothing can be done about any of the problems facing it!
During this relatively slim volume, Solnit manages to outline some of the issues that have confronted people in the past, and discuss ways that people have gathered together, focused their strengths, and managed to overcome incredible odds to achieve the goals of peace and humanity in all sorts of unimaginable circumstances.
The bottom line is that it is a book which makes an effort to bolster our spirits and encourage us to continue to fight whatever cause it is we are fighting for! The survival of endangered species, a decline in the rate of climate change, human rights---whatever it is we need to be fighting for or against, wherever we need to be doing it!!!
Solnit says that she believes in hope as "an act of defiance, or rather as the foundation for an ongoing series of acts of defiance, those acts necessary to bring about some of what we hope for while we live by principles in the meantime.
"There is no alternative, except surrender. And surrender not only abandons the future, it abandons the soul."
Positive food for thought! Without hope, what hope have we got!!!!!
