Entangled in sin
June 1, 2011 - The day of the turnaround
Some people might feel like this year is not going as planned. Or, in my case, it has erased your plans. But by God's authority, I declare today to be the day of the turnaround. Over half of the year is yet left, and 2011 can still be what you declared it to be.
Before we can get back on track, we have to acknowledge those things that have held us down.
Text: Romans 7
Subject: Entangled in Sin
In this passage, Paul was writing to the people about the wiles and trickeries of sin and how it just creeps up when we least expect it. in Verse 21 (a popular scripture), "When I would do good, evil is ever present."
It's something how that happens, too. When you decide to fast, your mom or your co-worker or friend decides to bring your favorite dessert. Maybe that's just temptation, so let's get real. When you decide to finally be saved and live saved, that boy or girl that you tried to get with for 17 months, waltzes right up smelling good, looking good, even sounding better. They all over you like you different from the last 10 times you tried to flirt with em or callem. That right there, is evil. If you're married (and it's somebody from high school or college), that's the devil's second identity--HOMEWRECKER.
And it happens every time you decide to do right and live right.
Paul said that these things come and entangle us and all the can produce is dead fruit. "For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death." Romans 7:5
In the Message Bible he says they produce-- well cause-- miscarriages and stillborn children, meaning they capture us and cause us to believe that only good can come from them and we waste all of our time with them. Then, we realize only death can come from them. At that point, we are emotionally attached and our emotions rupture. As soon as our emotions ruptured, we become lost. It's hard to have faith when you're sad and/or depressed. It's hard to trust God when you can't even smile. Getting saved might be the easiest thing in the world, but it's hard to stay saved-- especially when your emotions are here, there, and everywhere else.
But, at the same time, it's hard not to. When you think of a God that is so big and powerful and mighty that the only way man could describe is by calling him THE (as in THE-ology).
HE'S THE FATHER, THE SAVIOR, THE LORD, THE PROVIDER, THE HEALER, THE SHELTER, THE FRIEND, THE KING.
[He really is the Savior: any time, any place! (Just read this aloud). Lord God, I do believe that you're everything I need. I know I have done wrong. Today, I repent of all my sins, and I confess that you are God. Your son died on the cross for me, and he Rose with all power in his hands. He died that I might live and have power and authority. Thank you, Father, for thinking of me, loving me and caring for me. Amen.]
Like I said, it's that easy, but harder to stay saved. Jesus told the disciples in the garden:
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matt 26:41 NKJV
Weak is another word for evil. If you read Romans 7, you'll see several instances where Paul's notes his own spiritual walk and how hard it has been for him. He discusses how his flesh even tricked him into distorting God's law when he was persecuting Christians.
This walk never gets easier. Our faith just has get stronger. We have to consciously command our flesh that we won't bow to the same ole things. We won't give up on our fasts on the first, second, and third days. We won't "bless" people out every time they look our way. We won't cut people off getting onto the elevator. It's crazy what our flesh will lead us to do when we don't keep it in check--under God's word and Command.
This will probably the Significant verse for this message (memory verse):
"What I don't understand about myself is that I decide one way, but then I act another, doing things I absolutely despise." Romans 7:15 MSG Bible
And it happens every time. We do things that we wouldn't even normally do just to do something. Sin is a web of the Devil lies, lies told to allegedly satisfy us, perpetuate our thirst for more lies, but designed to steal from us and kill us and destroy us. That's all the Devil is good for.
Don't allow yourself to be entangled in his web. Read God's word. Sing his worship songs. Talk to his other lambs. And even if you do fall--later today, tomorrow, next week or month, don't be too ashamed to get back up. God has purpose for your life and no amount of sin can ever deter that. Jesus Christ is the same: yesterday, today, and forevermore. NO sin is too big. NO guilt is to heavy. You have power, dominion, and authority to tear down, burn, prevent any web of lies Satan could ever construct.
