Help! Camping advice!

April 29th 2007 21:54
: Saving money in Iceland = camping?
Alright. So, as you've read, my Icelandic odyssey is going to require some financial focus.

(Note: check this to get an idea of kronur vs. dollars. C'mon, dollar, grow! =P::: )

Glitch, maybe?
This is supposedly Reykjavik webcam image. I told you Reykjavik was cool.

When I was last in Iceland, it was in the winter -- and practically no one cares to do the tourist thing in Iceland in the dead of winter, so accommodations were both cheap and largely uncrowded.

This
trip, though, is going to be a different story. Though I have a place to stay through the university, I'm only able to stay beginning July 1st. I'll be arriving several days before my shelter is available, so, given that's it's warm tourist season, it's gonna be rough to find a place to crash without crashing my credit cards.

I could stay here, in Keflavik. The cost of a hostel room would kill me. But, as you can see, the price for a "sleeping bag room", where I slumber-party it indoors with a bunch of other people, is pretty doable.

More doable still is this -- a campsite! It's pretty damned cheap by summertime Icelandic touchstones. But!

I know nothing about camping. I know I can't just sleep on the ground. I can hardly pitch a tent (no trouser-tent quips, please). So, I have to figure out:

1. If it's worth acquiring and packing camping supplies.
2. If I should spring for a small 1-man tent.
3. If I should spring for a sleeping back.
4. Or both?
5. Will the space they take up in my luggage be worth it?
6. Will I use them more than once in Iceland? Possibly for the 3 nights I'll be there after my accommodations end?
7. Will I use them at home?
8. Must I buy my own? Will some sucker friend lemme steal theirs for a month?
9. I'll arrive at midnight IN BROAD DAYLIGHT OMFGWTFBBQBBC!!1 Will I sleep at ALL?

Quite a quandary, indeed.

Man, I don't think I've said anything inflammatory this post. Um. Hmm. I bet the vast majority of self-help authors fuck minors? ... There. That'll do.
