Keeping homes warm in winter accounts for two-thirds of domestic energy bills. For every degree you lower the temperature, you can save 10 per centof your bill - and help slow down global warming
Radiators should be fitted with thermostats so you can reduce or switch off heat in rooms used only occasionally. Taking a winter break? Leave the heating on at 5°C to prevent burst pipes. If you replace your boiler, by law you must install a condensing one, which can save 40 per cent of your bill compared to a conventional boiler.
A real fire is a treat, but 85 per cent of the heat goes up the chimney. A wood-burning stove eats less fuel and is 70 per cent efficient, provided the logs are well seasoned; wood also produces fewer acid-rain chemicals than oil, coal or gas.
