Heart-Burn
We never really worked out. Too much doubt and pain.
I tried to be there for you, even when you didn't want me around.
And your absence and presence both hurt and dissolved me.
You were like the police:
always there when you shouldn't be,
and never there when I needed you.
Only when I threatened to walk away did you say you cared, or pay me due attention.
I feel used, and cheated of my worth.
I never heard you say 'I love you'. Was this because you didn't, or because you were afraid?
I love to love you.
I hate to hate you.

All I ever wanted was you. But what about me?
Games pervade. Do you even know the truth anymore?
I wonder.
And now I sit, wine in hand,
watching smoke curl from invisible lips,
and the feint trace of a smile is forming.
I kiss you in the sunset,
until the memory fades to black.
