Has Music Lost It's Soul?
August 6th 2007 14:40
I recently overheard a conversation, I think between two talking heads, about whether or not music has become soul-less. The gist of the position that it has lost soul is that there is much less 'supply and demand' motivation to create the music that will take the world by storm. No longer, goes this mantra, will bands such as the Beatles or Rolling Stones emerge with the next, best thing ever. Rather, anybody, nearly anywhere, can create a digitally produced musical piece and submit it to numerous venues for possible indidvidual download from whomever it is that takes a fancy to said tune. And the big, successful artists are also able to submit individual pieces for download rather than put together an entire ensemble (otherwise known as an album).
The next element of the soul-less argument is the availability of creating digital pieces with next to no talent what-so-ever. All one need do is obtain the software (garageband, music studio, etc...), gain acess to innumerable 'loops' of sound, and weave together a work of "art".
Is that art? I suppose that is the question, art presumably being an expression of soul.
I don't think that music has lost soul. I think that whatever it is that stirs a musician or a digital tactician to create music is fully caught up in soul. I like that.
No, I love that!

Small Thoughts on Big Questions
However, I don't think the fact that people can more easily access tools to create music is a bad thing at all. They may have less "talent" in some ways, to be sure, but if they are able to construct a unique, pleasing melody that no one has heard before, who cares how they do it? I think that the new technology opens the door for more music possibilities and should not be regarded as a bad thing.
Cool post!

I also agree with this statement."..I don't think that music has lost soul. I think that whatever it is that stirs a musician of a digital tactician to create music is fully caught up in soul. I like that..."

However, I don't think music can ever lose its soul.. . the really innovative stuff doesn't come down the radio anymore - it's found in the dark places of the internet, or in musty clubs.

Technology has made music more accessible to listeners and creators alike. I like to think that this environment is fostering creativity!

I agree with you....my flat mate works at a radio station and brings home a pile of CD's each week...a broad range of music...some of it isnt to my taste and some of it is downright bland...but basically there are still great artists out there producing great "art".....
You sum it up perfectly...
I don't think that music has lost soul. I think that whatever it is that stirs a musician of a digital tactician to create music is fully caught up in soul. I like that.

As social trends change so does the music.

There are still hundreds and thousands of actual musicians and artists out there who have soul and express it through their music.
Unfortunately though, the pop charts are littered with the foul stench of money hungry music moguls who release songs based on their commercial viability.
While there's a market though, you can hardly blame them.
It's about educating people on what music has quality, and ensuring that they support it accordingly.

I see what you mean but I do believe that there's still great music for great artists. Lately, I like to listen to Maroon 5's music.
