The questioning mind - by Milly

Has Al Gore's film made a difference?

November 18th 2006 03:11
A couple of weeks ago I went to see Al Gore's film, 'An Inconvenient Truth'. At first I was not overly impressed with the film. I disliked the way Gore interwove aspects of his life into the hard-fact story line. I thought here we go again, another American who wants to beat his chest and score a couple of brownie points in the political realm.

I was also sceptical of many of the figures he provided. He did not seem to substantiate many of his claims or justify where he got his facts. For example, he said that many Pacific Islanders had to relocate already because of the rising sea levels. This problem is compounded by the fact that the Pacific Islands are flat.

To Gore's credit, many of his accusations have been henceforth substantiated by newspaper reports and other publications on global warming that have surfaced since the film. Politicians are also taking a more active interest in the issue of global warming at the UN meetings in Nairobi. As a result, I have changed my opinion of the film, and have decided that despite Gore’s rhetoric on his life, his film has made a great contribution to our generation by reigniting public debate.

What are your thoughts on the film? What do you believe can be done to overcome the problems associated with global warming?

I agree: the film has actually stimulate a lot of debate and got people thinking. Maybe I'm just a bit out of it, but it seems that more people, the media and the like, are talking about global warming and that we need to start doing something about it. I didn't have a huge problem with his life story interwoven, if only that it felt a little out of place.

As to what needs to be done: education, action, and people working together. Which might sound simplistic, but that's what's going to have to go on to support the practical aspects (such as alternative engery sources) for it to go ahead.

Jacqui B,

CHeers for the imput. Yeah, I think it's great that people are finally talking about it again. I'm 21, and I remember when I was at primary school people were talking about it back then. Phrases like CFCs floated around everywhere. THen suddenly people just stopped caring...or still cared but didn't talk about it much. So his film was beneficial, but I agree that the snippets of his life were out of place.

Hey Adrienne,

Yeah it is a must see. There's another one coming out about Guantanamo that's meant to be really good as well.

Fairly useless comment here, but yeah, I reckon it's definitely raised the profile of the issue... I don't see how it could not have, actually.

Hi Milly,

Great Post!

Now you just know I'm going to say that I think what this man is doing for global awareness of pollution what Thomas Edison did for the light bulb!! Like you, I felt there were some faults at first... but later, I realised he is a very clever man...the kicker is that I read somewhere on Orble *trying desperately to think where* that Al had just become a member of the Board on Apple Mac computers after it was announced that the company had very eco-unfriendly products....? *am investigating*

I will come back here when I remember (or find) the blog in Orbleland that had the official document and information... perhaps they'll come forth...

...anyway the point is that Al is doing a great job and so are you...

Lilla...

Ps Milly, some of the greatest love songs ever written were simple four lined rhymes...

Wow, Lilla, you really do get around ha ha. You should be writing some more of those poems of yours. I know, it's so tempting just to float around orble for a couple of hours.

Have you been reading/ watching the news lately? I've been recovering from uni exams and a bit slack. WHat happened with the Nairobi conference?

Milly,

*lol* ... short answer : No!

...longer version... I just told my children the other day that when I'm dead, I want it written on my headstone :

'...[whatever] ... at least she tried to keep up with current affairs...'

*gaffaw*

It's hard going... I usually catch up on orble and on the net, besides I can't stand the TV news... *gag* ... but I am on to it eventually and will probably do a post on something related...thanks for the heads up...

Lilla...

Haven't seen it, but then, I don't watch many movies.

Too many other things happening.

I think it helped to raise the awareness, even though the awareness was growing anyway.

I think it will also help grow understanding.

If you already know a lot about it, Josh, I don't think there's much point watching the film. It's just good for ignorant souls like myself know don't have a clue about the extent of the damage global warming is causing. Cheers for the comment!
