Filesharing on a home network part 1

February 14th 2007 01:55
I am sorry that I haven't been posting at all lately, but I have been in-between many things. I am hoping to post a bit more once everything starts falling into place. Anyway, a quick post (and many many people already know about this but hey, it doesn't hurt to post it here!) to recommend a good filesharing program if you have a few computers at come and don't want to use windows fileshare (which by the way I reckon is quite dodgey).

DC (Direct connect) is a really good software which lets you share files on a network which you can control and customize as you wish. One of the best things about it is that it is freeware. I would like to post a walkthrough to set up a direct connect hub but at this point in time I am swamped with a bunch of other stuff. Anyway, as far as the software is concerned it is very user-friendly and easy to use. Here's some print screens which should give you an idea about the GUI.

This is the mainchat screen. On the right are all the users and on the left there's a utility to put textchat to communicate with users.

That should give the reader a basic overview!

I will soon post a bit more about this because at the moment I am restricted by limited availability of internet and time. Apologies about being so irregular at the moment

An IE 7 tweak.

December 2nd 2006 05:42
Allrighty, so I kinda sorta figured I'd review IE yesterday and in my last post I ended up mentioned a few cool features with the new IE. But this morning I woke up and realised that I'd test this new feature onto - this struck me outta nowhere. And boy did it work!!

In my previous post I did mention the new IE feature wherein one can embed a search engine of their choice onto IE 7. This is probably because some users find it convinient to embed search engine toolbars onto their browsers which is kinda nice and all, but the more toolbars one installs, the more loading time. Loading times can be annoying ya know!

Now, I do a lot of online research about software usage mainly cos I am a newbie to all this (I think!) and sometimes I look up things which are related to my study or things which interest me from the science and technology domain. A lot of this information uses acronyms which I basically have no idea about and hence I use www.acronyfinder.com to look these up and research what their significance in all that information is...you know what I mean I guess.

This morning I figured I'd just test if the embed search engine onto IE option works with any website which basically has a query look-up box (much like acronym finder) and boy did it work. I have always wanted to embed the query look-up box from acronym finder onto my browser cos that would make it so much easier - looking up acronyms a click and a keyword away and what not! But there were no toolbars I could install. Oh well, I hate them anyway but here's how I tweaked my IE!

1) go to www.acronymfinder and in the search box type the word "TEST". Copy the URL it comes up with (should be http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?Acronym=TEST&Find=find&string=exact )

2) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx and paste the above URL onto the first box. In the second box enter "Acronym Finder" or any other such phrase which you can use to call the website you are querying from and click install.

3) Voila! it will appear in your IE7 window on the top right corner as a menu item. Select that to look up acronyms!

Thats it! no more toolbars! yay!

The new Internet Explorer (IE 7)

December 1st 2006 07:52
Ok, so I know I haven't posted anything in a while. I was just caught up with other things - summer's almost here so need to find a job and other such things.

Having just installed the new Internet explorer from microsoft - IE7 I figured what better way to post another entry and at the same time study some of the new features IE has to offer in this version. Having a quick look at this, I cannot help but mention the fact that it has quite a few security features - but at the same time is quite quick to load (almost the same amount of load time as IE6) - also it isn't too hard on the eyes! Here! have a look at it with your own eyes!

IE7
IE now has a cool new look!

Here's a few awesome features of the new IE:

1) Tabbed browsing: Ok, so firefox first came up with this idea I guess. What this means is that a multiple instances of IE can be started in the same window. Efficient and doesn't crowd the task bar very much. Plus, additional tabs do not take time to load up - well, not as much as a new window would. And they look cool!

Anyway, IE has a new feature which makes tabbed browsing cooler. The quick tabs button! Its awesome actually. Here's what the feature offers:

If you end up opening a lot of multiple tabs, simply click the quick tabs option (it a button with four blue rectangles on it) and it will show you all the tabs that are open so nagivation should be easier. Awesome eh?

2) Embedd your favourite search engine: Now you can add your favorite search engine to your browser. So, no more toolbars required!

at first start up IE can customise itself to embedd your favourite search engine onto itself!

mine's obviously google

3) Phishing protection: This is an awesome feature especially for people who do not use the internet too much.

Whats phishing you might ask? Hmm, sometimes there are bad people. Who get on the internet. And do bad things...

I will give the explaining a better shot. Sometimes, you might receive messages in your inbox that might appear from websites like ebay or myspace asking you to change your password or logon to your account. They have the right email layout and they appear so flawless. Then you click their evil link and logon and suddenly someone randomly starts pasting myspace bulletins with your account. Yes, your account has been hacked now and you might wanna change your password. Know what I mean? Worse if it is ebay and you *logon* and enter your bank details!

But fret not for IE7 has a phishing filter! Cool eh?

To read more about phising: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing

This is all I got for now. There's a few other options which are an upgrade from IE6 like providing a favourites center, checking feeds etc but I am kinda happy about the ones I have mentioned before. I'd give IE7 an 8.5 / 10 overall.

Yes, this is a blog. Whilst there is a sea of millions, or possibly – billions of blogs on the internet this is not meant to quite fit that category. The topic at hand is technical / PC related support and trouble shooting of problems that any reader may have.

Recently, I’ve come across a lot of computers running a Windows NT based OS being affected by browser hijacking problems. The main symptom of this problem is when the browser’s home page gets redirected to some other page – normally one related to the spyware causing the browser hijacking problem in the first place. There are a variety of applications which can fix spyware problems such as adaware and spybot – S and D that are quite easy to use, yet in most cases have not been effective to remove browser hijacking problems. After doing a bit of research on the internet, I came across a popular freeware spyware removal application called Hijackthis (author Merijn Bellekom). To remove browser hijacking problems using Hijackthis, one may follow these few simple steps:

1) Double click hijackthis and press “Do a system scan and save a log file

on Myspace and Google Holding Hands Now?

Ah, I know what you mean. Yeah, people are kinda strange like that but there is an option in the myspace profile settings which disables automatic song playback when other users visit their pages.
But I totally agree with you, it does get annoying.

I could definitely see it coming mainly because myspace is very popular. I do not hate myspace personally because I have an account and it was kinda innovative when it first came into existence - mainly because it was a nice little way to get up to date news about music artists.
