Happy Birthday Pop
May 14th 2008 04:38
Today is my dad's 77th birthday. I am so pleased that I was able to spend it with him.
My dad is a smarty pants.....full of vinegar and mischief. A wonderful dad through and through, a sports fanatic, a sarcastic, self depricating, dead panned humor and self proclaimed SOB. He is witty and funny, with an incredibly contagious laugh. He fun to be around with never a dull moment. He will tell you anything you want to know about the History of Rock and Roll or the Blues. Name any muscle car; he can give you stats, he is highly amused by "My Name is Earl" and a huge fan of the Allman Brothers. His favorite movie series is "The Thin Man" with Myrna Loy and WIlliam Powell'.
We spent countless hours watching sports: football, baseball, hockey, racing, golf, and extreme sports of all kinds. He taught me how to gamble my chore money playing poker with friends and family. He let me take sips of his moonshine when I was little. Hanging with my dad is always without question entertaining. When you are with him, you knew you were going to have a good time.
If ever one could be described in one word, his would be Curmudgeon.
*Curmudgeon: one who hates hypocrisy and pretense and has the temerity to say so. Anyone with the wit and wisdom to point out life's unpleasant and disagreeable facts in an engaging and humorous manner. They are more soft-hearted and caring than most, yet carry that heavy heart behind a vail of protective crustiness.
My dad always taught us to do the right thing no matter what. Be honorable. Be Kind. Think for yourself. He taught me that it was OK to rebel against he and Mom because otherwise I might take it out against society. My dad cares that I believe in something bigger than myself, could defend my reasoning, and that I do what I say I am going to do.
I hit the parent lottery and every day I am grateful.
