Hamming it up with a hate crime
April 24th 2007 13:23
I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't read it for myself. I was watching a news show which mentioned it as a "ham sandwich" hate crime. I didn't actually see the story so I did what any rational person would do. I googled it. And there it was. Students in a middle or junior high school in the US (where else?) apparently threw a paper bag with a ham sandwich onto a table where Somali Muslims were eating. It was reported that one of the boys looked into the bag and pulled out the sandwich. Of course the Muslims were so highly offended that the school officials are bending over backwards to appease them.
I mean no offense to Muslims and their beliefs but simply being near pork/ham/bacon is that enough to cause this much outrage? The real problem with this, is that now people now have to be so very careful about what they eat and where they eat it. Since it is now considered offensive to have pork near Muslims whats next? Perhaps eating ice cream near an obese person will be a hate crime too? How about eating any meat in front of a vegetarian? Or simply keeping your food down near a bulimic? Do you see where I'm going with this. This sets a very dangerous precedent not just in a religious sense but also a wider more general meaning as well.
So my dear well meaning reader just be careful about what you eat in public. Next time you may just be offending someone somewhere near you and you may end up paying more than for just your meal.
