Haile at the Berlin Marathon

Haile Gebrselassie came oh so close to breaking the marathon world record on Sunday in Berlin. A fantastic run in windy, 20 degrees conditions saw Haile run through 35k still 20 seconds under Paul Tergat's world record (set in 2003 at Berlin, 2:04:55), but the final 7k took its toll as Haile just missed the world record by one minute, running 2:05:56. Haile ran almost the entire second half of the race by himself after his pacemakers dropped out early, and the Kenyan pace makers dropped off after around 25k.
Haile main competition was Sammy Korir, the second fastest marathoner ever. Korir ran one second behind Tergat in his world record run, after being the pacemaker for most of the race.
In Berlin, Korir was in the mix for the first third of the race, but pulled out at around 25k.
