Haha... Silly Christians
May 6th 2009 02:22
I got given a free bible the other day at my university. It was being given out by a member of the Gideons, an association that puts bibles in hotels, at hospitals, and in the hands of secondary students (and uni students, apparently).
In the front of the bible is a short prayer, translated into 17 of the world's most popular languages. One of these is Indonesian.
I won't directly translate the prayer, but in summary it is a short prayer to Allah.
Wait, what?
For those of you that don't speak Indonesian: Yes, Allah means God. However, it is specific to the Muslim God. There are other words that could be used (Tuhan is a generic term for a deity).
So, in short, this Christian organization is handing out bibles that contain a prayer to Allah.
I was going to go tell the guy handing out the bibles, but I really just didn't have the heart.

No it isn't. Christian Arabs refer to God as 'Allah' too. It really is just Arabic for 'God'. Muslims do use it as a proper noun true, which is probably why there is so much confusion and why many in the West think the Muslim god is a different god, when really it's all the same make believe god.

I don't know, maybe you're more of an expert on Indonesia than me and my teacher. It's possible.

When you say "specific to the Muslim God", you are implying that it is a different god. It isn't. That's why they won't use the term 'tuhan'. Because it's not a generic god. it's God. Captial G. Or A.

Just to clarify... Muslims in Indonesia refer to God as Allah because of the Arab-Islam connection. Alot of religious language in Indonesia is directly or derived from Arabic. Christian Indonesians, on the other hand, have no connection to Arab language, and so do not use Allah to refer to God. I realize that Muslims, Jews and Christians all worship the same God, but they all have different names for them. All I'm saying is that in an Indonesian text they used a word for God specific to Indonesian Muslims, is all.
TeVo - I was baptized and attended church in my early life. I still believe in a higher power, but I would classify myself as an agnostic rather than a Christian.
Also, I am not such a big fan of being insulted on my own blog by some unknown who knows nothing about me. If you have a problem with me or my thoughts, by all means throw them out there and I will discuss them like a reasonable person. Are you calling me silly for being a Christian? Or for not being a total Christian? Clarify, buddy.
If, on the other hand, you are just going to call me names, well, then feel free to fuck right off.

If you look at this, as a reasonable person, you will see what I have said is no different to what you have written.
Thank you for clarifying your agnosticism.

Also, i missed the humor in your comment, so i apologize for responding so, well, viciously. Like I mentioned in response to Ruby, I haven't been getting much sleep, so... basically I'm a bit of a cunt at the moment, so again, sorry!
