LIFE 2.0 – UNPLUGGED

May 24th 2007 17:35
One bleak evening in late March of this year, my hard disk decided to dislodge a microscopic grain, which miraculously materialised in its airtight, impregnable, stainless steel casing. The grain in turn wreaked havoc on all my documents, spreadsheets, emails, photos, music, movies rendering me an entertainment and information cripple.

The upshot of this unfortunate incident was that I was left without access to a computer for nearly 2 months as I waited for data recovery experts to marvel at how the microscopic grain made it into the hard disk in the first place.

‘A modern day miracle’, ‘In all my years…’, ‘It’s unbelievable’ and ‘Oh, by the way…you’re screwed!’ were just some of the comments the global team of technicians assigned to my case offered me in sympathy.

But it wasn’t all bad news because if it wasn’t for this unfortunate incident I would never have discovered that my external back-up drive had also been experiencing miraculous manifestations since Christmas last year.

After a minor bout of disorientation, I slowly rediscovered life prior to the mid 90s - the Unplugged version…

For the last few months for example, MySpace has literally been my ‘space’. The only difference is that in the unplugged version, you avoid the people requesting to be added as your friend.

Snail mail is fast mail when it’s your only mail. I even got to say hello to my postman. Unfortunately he was listening to his iPod at the time and didn’t notice.

No news is good news, especially when your only source for news is television. For goodness sake, can someone do something about the cats-in-trees infestation that seems to be plaguing this city!

I was never one for the unexplained and supernatural but without access to a computer, I found myself falling behind in my ISP payments for the internet service I could no longer use as I was without a computer. The problem was that I couldn’t access their bills as they were being sent by email as part of a ‘more intimate service’.

This in turn got me thinking; if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Unfortunately I couldn’t google the answer. You know what we need? A printed version of Wikipedia! I can see it now, the perfect reference tool for the offline world encompassing humanity’s collective wisdom and knowledge. I’ll call it the…‘Encyclopaedia’!

I even got to see the inside of bank again and WOW! modern furnishings, the latest technology and open spaces almost disguise the same old clueless and unfriendly service that we all pay through the nose for.

But thank goodness for mobile phones and voicemail, as a client of mine was still able to terminate me without notice despite my termination email bouncing the first time.

As I already have a Second Life, I am treating this experience as my third one!

Reflections on Samoa

March 11th 2007 14:31
Back home form our much-needed holiday and have hit the ground running after catching up on the day we lost on the way there.

But amongst the hustle and bustle of Sydney life I’ve had a chance to reflect on the calm and balm of Samoa.

Samoa may be over 4000 km away and 22 hours behind but the differences run deeper that just distance and time.

While there are fundamental political, economical and cultural differences it is the observations in daily life that are the most telling.

For example, in Samoa, it rains when it is needed most which pretty much covers a 24 hour window 7 days a week.

In Sydney there’s no time to relax, in Samoa you are too relaxed to worry about time or anything else for that matter.

A busy street in Sydney has more vehicles at anyone time than all of Samoa all the time. There are as many animals on the road as there in Sydney but the animals in Samoa are not behind the wheel.

Our convenient stores are at least convenient but for all their inconvenience Samoan stores are the only ones that sell ‘Pepsi’ which is punch flavoured and tastes like medicine.

But most telling involves our very own Banks who can learn quite a bit from their off shore branches. No queues and a friendly service. Did I mention in my last post that it was paradise? But enough of that as I can already hear the accountants asking how these unacceptable practices have crept into the banking system.

Samoa, different enough to be paradise.

When in Samoa..

February 20th 2007 08:24
Greetings from Upolu, one of the 2 major islands that make up Samoa. I do believe its yesterday here. Its funny that you can fly fore 22 hours and be 9 hours behind and yet a simple 5 hour flight due east from Sydney sets you back nearly s whole dsy. But that's ok, because when we fly back we will land in tomorrow.

The weather is hot and humid as you would expect but I was surprised to see that the art of ensuring sunshine will prevail by leaving your sunglasses behind is a universal phenomenon.

The Sinalei resort is spectacular once you get over the no TV, radio nor newspaper theme they have running here. At first I thought this was unique to the resort but its seems to be the way throughout the island. No wonder Robert Louise Stevenson wrote 13 books in 4 and half years before he paased away here.

The service is great but as you may have gathered, a little primative. For example the phone lines into and out of the resort were down for the last 4 days which meant no internet nor access to the front desk. In the end it was simply a faulty chord that was causing the problem but as is the norm around here, no one seemed to care. ''Not a care in the world'' - the new Samoan motto, but when you live in paradise, who can blame them!

With television viewers seemingly not being able to get enough of this genre, would-be TV producers are flooding network programmers with a record number of locally made pilots. Here is the HA! Magazine’s guide to the best the new season, has to offer.

From the producers of the highly acclaimed real life hospital drama, RPA, comes MPAR, an inside look at the daily lives of a bunch of hard working mechanics at the Marrickville Prestige Auto Repairs workshop. The show focuses on co-owners Nick and Spiro as they tackle a multitude of life-threatening mechanical problems. Highlights include a pink-slip inspection, which uncoveres a balding rear tyre and the touching story of Mr Wilson, a 73-year-old pensioner from Enfield, whose routine oil change becomes a series of complicated engine overhauls

The National Song Revisited

February 6th 2007 09:30
Ex Amanda Vanstone recently penned a new national song for Australia. Unfortunately with the climate crisis we are facing it probably won't get a chance to become part of our folklore. Here is an alternative, more contemporary version for the immediate future:

DIAL ‘1’ FOR DELETE

January 14th 2007 04:51
I recently purchased an external hard drive to back up the whatever comes after ‘giga’ bytes of data that HA! Magazine has generated over the last 9 months. Shaped like a metallic brick, this ‘vital part of any new business’ would also help me sleep at night despite the constant buzzing noise it emits.

For a while there it performed its duties admirably even prompting me to keep feeding it data whenever it felt hungry. Somehow I managed to back up 200GB of data in 2 months including the accompanying software needed to run on the PC. Not a bad feat given the hard disk I was backing up was only 100GB

As much as I would have loved to have been announcing that I’ve broken my New Year’s resolution that I’m giving up the drink or even cutting back sex on Sundays, I’m afraid that my attempt to remove a vice from my life each January is simply not that exciting. But at do have a broken resolution to report…

It may have been the lure of the bright lights of the Candy Bar or even the freckled smile desperately trying to break through the freshly laid braces but my resolution to lay off the chocolate this year was unceremoniously shattered with a rather expensive purchase of a triple choc ice cream ‘treat’ during a visit to the movies yesterday

The New Calendar

December 29th 2006 00:25
Having spent the last few days wandering aimlessly in an abyss of call centres and the World Wide Web, desperate to connect with anyone willing to listen to my problems let alone interested in fixing them, I would like to propose a rethink of the existing calendar in order to eliminate the void between Boxing Day and New Years Eve once and for all.

Lets face it, apart from the retail frenzy, which accompanies the post Christmas sales, life during this period enters a temporary stasis anyway. Unfortunately all non-living things like computers, cars, telephones and god forbid, televisions, don’t creating an unwanted and precarious scenario, which I have experienced in the last few days as I’ve tried to repair my computer after an untimely breakdown

I've run out of banks to switch to. I try not to let it upset me and see the funnier side of things. I had no idea the humour would be so rich and plentiful,
