Gun Violence

December 15th 2012 15:45
The mass shooting of 20 children, school staff, the gunman's mother and then himself, brought most of us to a standstill while the story unfolded. As both a funeral director and a priest, I have walked with families who loose children to gun violence and the pain is absolutely indescribable.

My own transformations have lead me to understand that I, like most of us, do not have the answers to lessening gun violence. I don't believe that whole, healthy, spiritual, persons simply go after innocent persons methodically killing one after another. Would writing and enforcing gun control legislation stop these senseless murders? I seriously doubt that would deter the most determined individuals.

Several minutes ago, an announcement was made that the gunman had gone to the school several days ago and was engaged in an argument with four staff members. Did this set the stage for this unimaginable slaughter?

However horrific these deaths, this can and should be a transformative time for each of us. The lesson needs not condemn the use of guns.......we must consider how we "kill" with words, actions, example. Parents hovering over their children, yelling, using pronfanity, and threatening, "I'll take care of you later!!" can easily become the reaction of thse children as they become adults....and their children after them. The reactions might well become more hurtful and day, the reaction might bring us to remember yesterday's violence and death.

I urge each and every reader today, to take time contemplating the events of the last two days. Let your thoughts and emotions flow freely. Ask, what if that was my child? do I approach questions about gun control?.....

We are transformed by this horrific crime and taking of lives, it is impossible to not be so transformed. With our thoughts, emotions, reactions focused on those innocent children and their families, how can we not pray, ask if we pay a part in this by our silence on gun control? We must teach our children that violence is not the way to resolution.

Eternal life give them O God, and let perpetual life shine upon them. Amen.
