3 SUMMER PROBLEMS

April 19th 2012 08:06
1. Uneven skin tone and discoloration
HOW AND WHY? Incorrect application of sunscreen

Sunscreen application should not be limited to just a pea sized portion unlike other creams and lotions, as they say “the more the merrier”. There’s no “too much” when it comes to sunscreen, not just the SPF strength that matters but also the regularity of the application

Store a light weight sunscreen on your beach bag when you tend to sweat more. Sunscreen is usually the main blockade of the sun’s UV rays and will likely be windswept by swear which may exposed some parts of your skin to harm which causes these uneven discoloration and patches on your face and body. After your toner and moisturizer then comes the sunscreen last.

IMPROVEMENT: If you sweat so much or engaged in physical activities on the beach, always look for a water resistant or waterproof sunscreen formula. It’s definitely icky to apply or even reapply sunscreen to a sweaty face or body but it’s a must! You can also try reverting to primer with SPF instead of makeup base products.

2. Brittle Hair
HOW AND WHY? The SUN

Protecting our scalp from heat on a daily basis is one of the main purpose of our hair. Imagine what it endures daily which could lead to brittleness, dryness, coarseness and even split ends.

IMPROVEMENT: Shampoos which contains keratin and amino acids and deep conditioning your hair at least once a week. Doing this won’t just help your hair to resist and lessen the damaging effects caused by the sun but also helps minimize breakage issue. There are several shampoos specially formulated for summer, you can take your pick from wide array. When going out, always wear a hat or use umbrella because that way, you are also protecting your scalp from getting toasted.

3. Dry Skin
HOW AND WHY: Hot Shower, Exposure to Air Conditioner, Chlorine and Sunburn

Dry and scaly skin can be acquired when you make use of hot shower specially this summer because such routine will rob your skin of its natural oils. Itchy, dry and flaky skin can also be a result of staying in air conditioned room. Swimming on the other hand can also dry out your skin due to its high chlorine substance.

IMPROVEMENT: Double the moisture when summer begins. It’s the time that there is too much heat around and moisturizing is much needed. Keep lots of water or juices handy and a lightweight lotion with ingredients like cocoa butter and aloe. These ingredients helps irritated skin and locks in moisture. Choose heavier cream at night and exfoliate weekly to get rid dead skin cells. Its just simple basic summer skincare.

Bare Some Summer Skin

April 18th 2012 07:59
What causes body acne? Nothing else but sweat and bacteria. Its those nasty oils and swear that burrow and stays stuck in your pores which tends to become breakouts or commonly called “bacne”. Its such an ugly sight. Why does this happen? mainly because our backs are out of our reach so its very prone to deposits of sweat and oil. I was a victim of this myself until I found out how to properly fix it.

Using an anti-bacterial soap or shower gel in the morning helps and using a salicylic acid based body wash keeps the pores clean as well. You have to use small towel to reach behind your back (if someone will help you rub your back, much better). Breathable fabrics that helps absorb swea away from the body is important too. A small towel needs to be a constant sight in your kit to IMMEDIATELY wipe excess sweat specially after a work out(in cases you can’t shower, use antibacterial wipes).

Now, its facial oiliness. I extremely hate this and I did my best to put toner, exfoliant just to remove this but I was mistaken. Facial oiliness is from over washing the face, heavy night creams, heavy make-up, extreme humid weather and poor diet. Washing your face more often in an attempt to cool yourself down will strip your face natural oils thus leaving it to work overtime to produce more. Slathering a heavy night cream on your face will give you shine problems throughout the day, Spicy, alcoholic food will dilate blood vessels making you sweat and produce oil.

Do the switch this summer. If you are using cream switch to emulsion. If you are using emulsion switch to gel or fluid or a good choice would be a serum to provide moisture(the light formula will give you good stuff while keeping your face fresh and matte). Do away with heavy foundation and switch to tinted moisturizer or light concealers. It helps covers flaws or blemish. Keep blotting papers handy (dont wash your face, I repeat).

Regardless of how well you take care of your skin if your diet is not suited then all would be in vain. Vitamin A enrich food helps slow down oil production so let that rule in your diet. Don’t forget that the sun is still up (even if its down), you have to drink lots and lots of water.

Enjoy your time out in the sun. Don’t be guilty as long as you know the proper skincare routine.

Hair Questions Answered

April 17th 2012 04:20
80% of women suffer from damaged hair but only 20% realize that the symptoms they are experiencing are result of their damaged hair. 40% of those women are hiding away because they are shy or ashamed of their dreadful looking tresses. I was a victim of “bad hair day” myself and it made me refuse to go out or even meet my friends specially go to the beach where your hair would be the main attraction plus the great bikini you wear, ugh! Doing the right hair care routine is not easy.

Have you ever wondered what got you into this mess? Or maybe you have known what you did to your hair. Yes, those simple things like towel drying; hair brushing and even hair styling can do so much damage for such a fragile hair. Want to test if you have damaged hair? Try doing this, curl a single strand of hair around your finger and drop it into a glass of water. If it takes long for the strand of hair to spring back to its original form, then you've got unhealthy hair. Oops, you got one right?

There are so many things one can do to that could keep you from having healthy and shiny hair and how to have fun without damaging your hair.

1. Exposure to chemicals – your hair is fiber which is bundled in the middle and enclosed by a protective cuticle which is always the first to get damaged. Most chemicals when applied to hair can definitely damage the cuticle, making the inner fibers more prone.

Bleaching is the most common culprit. Lightening or changing the color of your hair strips the melanin in them which could change its normal structure.

Perms break the inner bond of hair only to reform them together so thus it builds a new structure. This treatment changes the hair’s basic structure which removes the protein bonds, these keeps the hair strong and lustrous.
If you can’t stop yourself from doing such treatments, make sure you do deep conditioning on a daily basis and treatment hair mask weekly. Organic hair dyes or henna would be a good option rather than go for the harsh chemical stuff.

2. Heat styling – Plain and simple, this stuff cracks the cuticle and removes the hair moisture leaving it dry and brittle! I would say AVOID this completely. If you really can’t in any cases, make sure to protect your hair. Applying leave-on conditioners to give it a protective barrier from heat can be done. When blow drying, keep the dryer 6 – 8 inches away from your mane. As for straighteners, when it’s not necessary, DON’T USE!

3. Use the right comb – remember the first rule: don’t brush when hair is wet. Hair is more fragile when wet so brushing to fight tangles will do more damage than help. Use a wide tooth comb to ensure that no breakage would happen.

Combs come in different sizes and shapes because they should be used on different hair types. Finer bristles should be used for fine hair. Fine to medium hair girls could use natural boar-bristle brush while thick haired/curly girls should use individually spaced bristles with coated tips to ensure that those tips won’t cause any breakage.

Brushing as much as a hundred times may cause your hair to look shiny because brushing helps distribute the oils from the scalp to the hairs but in the same way, you are exposing your hair to too much friction and the result would be split ends and more breakage!

4. Washing – I have encountered so many question as to how much is too much washing. Washing on a daily basis is fine but shampooing daily is not! Using shampoo daily can do more damage as it can strip your hair’s natural moisture making it look dry and dull.

Check the ingredients of your shampoo as well. Protein rich shampoo can help strengthen hair. Avoid too much friction when washing hair as this may also lead to breakage.

5. Tight Hairstyles - these types of hairstyle is easy to do but it causes hair to break and can permanently damage if done too often. Ponytails is so versatile, it can keep hair off our face at the gym and makes us look like sleek vixens at night but give your hair a break. Tugging and pulling it may just give you the worst result – hair fall and breakage.

We may not realize that we are slowly damaging our hair but it’s not yet over till it’s over, we can still do something to make our hair the “crowning glory” that we wish it to be.

Who would ever think that beer can be a remedy for toe nail fungus? I myself, I was a bit shocked, bewildered when I was told about it. No harm done so I tried it for my daughter, who got the icky problem after attending camp.

I will share how we did it

Coping with fungal infections on our nails is very easy if you take the essential steps though it may be still earlier. This is because fungus are still vunerable to the many toenail fungus treatments that you can use whilst there are still minimal in amount. Once they have multiplied and contains become more developed on our own nails, it becomes much more difficult to get rid of all of them.

Healthy Intake Equals Healthy Skin

November 28th 2011 07:16
We all want our skin to be healthy and blemish free. Sun, food, and other free radicals keeps us from achieving the skin we want. We all think of the sun as our enemy (well, almost because of the UV rays and the scorching heat) but do we also know that the food we eat may also have some relation in keeping our skin blemish free?

Yes, it does! Some foods we eat are too “chemically grown” thus giving us different kind of internal and external diseases. We need to check if our food is organic to avoid allergies, skin irritations and breakouts due to the toxins. Here are a few of “good” food list and keep them posted on top of your fridge:

Coffee beans contain caffeine which is a known stimulant of the body. This can result in the body becoming more alert and ready. But this is mainly seen when it is taken orally. When applied topically, this can have other effects such as being an anti-inflammatory.
