Green Day Musical

There is now a musical based on Green Day’s 2004 album “American Idiot.” It sounds like an idiotic idea, but the director, Michael Mayer (a Tony award winner), said, “I listened to the album and immediately it struck me that this was an amazing narrative.” Yes, seriously. Also, Billie Joe Armstrong, the band’s frontman said “I heard a lot of show tunes when I was a kid, and I guess that has been an influence on me.” So there you go.
Apparently the musical is to showcase a lot of physical moves, but not “’dancing’ dancing.” There is to be violence, as well, so this is not your sweet pea musical to take the kids to go see. The director is currently working on the “street mentality” musical at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre, but he says he sees no reason this show won’t make it to Broadway. No one, including Green Day, is giving away hints as to the plot of the show.
