Greatest Ever Halfback in NRL Rugby League Andrew Johns or Peter Sterling

June 15th 2008 00:30
Andrew Johns Peter Sterling Channel 9 Halfback 2008
The comparisons between the great Andrew Johns and Peter Sterling are many. Both talented Rugby League players, both at halfback and both critical to their teams success. Newcastle Knights and Parramatta Eels respectively.

One of their main defences was their defence. Andrew Johns was probably a more robust player and this showed in his defence. Often criticized for doing too much tackling, Johns would hit had and low and drive his opponent into the turf.

Peter Sterling was a good defender, but had shoulder problems at various times which limited his ability to tackle in large does and hit with the impact of Johns. David Gillespie actually ended Peter Sterlings career with a huge hit that knocked the halfbacks shoulder around and prevented him from continuing his career.

However, in some ways Johns ended similarly. He too had to quit the game for injury reasons, but it was actually due to a neck problem that was not only hurt in games but bumped at training as well.

Andrew Johns has quickly followed in the footsteps of Peter Sterling and they now both work for Channel 9 free to air TV for the NRL coverage on Friday and Sundays. (As of 2008 this is correct).

Johns was a poor on air commentator early on, nervous and shy on camera he didn't initially add a lot of value. However Channel 9 must have put him through a media course and helped his cause, as Johns has now come back bigger and better than ever - he talks extremely well on camera now and is much better than in previous years.

Sterling now heads up the football commentary on weekends, while he pulled out of the Footy Show with Paul Vautin and Co. Sterling is joined by Phil Gould, Ray Warren, Matthew Johns and Laurie Daley to co-ordinate the footy broadcast each week. Paul Vautin has fallen from favour and now only attends the Thursday night NRL footy show broadcast, no the weekly Friday Night Football and Sunday Football productions.
