Fulham V Atletico Madrid
Europa League final
HSH Nordbank Arena – Hamburg, Germany
19:45 GMT – 12 May 2010

Fulham’s European dream began almost a year ago on July 30 2009. No doubt fans at the time will have expected a swift exit from the competition, but, 11 months on, they face something they may have never dreamed of witnessing, their side in a European final. They scored an impressive nine goals over four qualifying legs, conceding only two to put them through to the group stages where they faced daunting opposition in the likes of Basle and Roma, but managed to finish second behind Roma, which set up the near ‘impossible’ task of beating last year’s holders ‘Shakhtar Donetsk, beating them 2-1 at home, and grinding out a 1-1 draw away from home.

When they were placed up against Italian giants Juventus, Fans must have seen the dream ending, especially after losing the first leg away from home 3-1. Things got worse after conceding almost instantly in the return leg, but they battled back to win 4-1. This gave fans the belief that their side could go out and beat anyone on their day, and they did jsut that, beating German outfits Wolfsburg and then Hamburg to set up this historic final.

Manager Roy Hodgson has to decide if Zamora, who has six goals in Europe but has been out since the semi-final on 29 April, will be fit to start in Hamburg.Paul Konchesky (ankle), Brede Hangeland (knee) and Aaron Hughes (groin) were all expected to train on Tuesday.John Pantsil and Bjorn Helge Riise should be fit after scares on Sunday. The duo were substituted during the 4-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal on the last day of the season, but Pantsil (muscle strain) and Riise (stomach cramps) should be fit for the Hamburg showpiece.

Hodgson rested many of his first-choice players for Sunday's game, but the defeat means the Craven Cottage club won just two of their final 11 Premier League fixtures. But all that will be forgotten if the west London club secure their first ever major piece of silverware on Wednesday.

Hodgson, who was named manager of the season by a record margin on Monday, has successfully steered Fulham on an incredible 18-game European journey. The Cottagers kicked off their campaign against Lithuanian minnows FK Vetra in the qualifying round in July. They then had to get past Italian giants Roma in the group stages.

Since reaching the knockout stages they have seen off Uefa Cup holders Shakhtar Donetsk, European giants Juventus and 2009 German champions Wolfsburg. Not to mention the fact they knocked out Hamburg in the semi-finals, depriving the Germans the chance to play a European final at their home ground.

Fulham do have some European pedigree in their ranks, manager Roy Hodgson took Inter Milan to the final of the Uefa Cup in 1997, Danny Murphy won the trophy with Liverpool in 2001 and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer featured in Middlesbrough's defeat in the 2006 final. But there is no doubt that victory over Atletico Madrid in Hamburg would be the greatest single achievement in Fulham's 131-year history, and complete one of the most remarkable fairytales in European football history.

Meanwhile, Atletico rested seven players as they played out a 1-1 draw with Gijon in their penultimate match of the season in La Liga.Sergio Agüero, Diego Forlán, Raúl García, Simão, Paulo Assunção, Luis Perea and David de Gea were all rested by Atletico coach Quique Sánchez Flores on Saturday.
