Great Brain Teasers for Your Pit Bull
February 23rd 2009 04:53
After taking several courses with my pits, I have found several fun and entertaining ways to keep them busy, feed and out of trouble.
If you have a pit bull terrier, you probably already see the amounts of intense energy they possess, along with their unique intelligence and need to be challenged and stimulated mentally.
So! What is a loving owner to do?
I and many others have found that making they work for their food is a great way to keep them busy and satisfied for a little while.
Think about it. Go way back before their were domestic dogs that had been fed by their human companions. They didn't have anyone to feed them, they have to hunt, search, discover and uncover their food.
That is often times why theu end up tearing apart your furniture, carpet, dishes, or toys. They are looking for something to do! And I will tell you, a big bone does not always do it. Its not challenging enough. Sometimes a little peanut butter on top helps, but only until the peanut butter is gone.
To help you keep your terrier terror busy, let talk about some creative ways I have found to keep them happy, healthy and entertained for a few hours.
Milk Jugs - Put their favorite kibble and some pieces of cheese or meet inside the jug. You will want to put plenty in their for them to get out, but not so much that the jug is to heavy to tip over and kick around.
If your board, grab a chair and watch them have at it. I guarantee your pitty pup will love it! They can kick it, chew on it, toss it around, drag it, and do all sorts of other things to get the food and treats out. Its a blast!
Glass Bottles - This one is one that you will need to supervise for a while to see how your dog handles it. I wouldn't even suggest it unless you have a pup thats like mine and shreds plastic, rubber, cardboard and any other form of container.
You can take a glass bottle that came from a juice or soda, and given it has a large enough hole for some kibble and treats, fill it up! Make sure that the kibble and treats are small enough to fall out when the bottle has been kicked around.
Plastic Water Bottle - This one is great if your dog understand the goal is to get the food out and not to tear the plastic apart. Just remember that in a dogs world, any tactic is fair game. So just make sure to see how they do it the first couple of times, to make sure they don't eat the plastic.
Plastic bottles are great because they make lots of noise when they jump or chew on them to get the food out.
An Old Sock - Okay, this might sound kind of gross, but the dogs love it! Put a bunch of kibble in an old sock you don't want anymore. They have a great time trying to get the food to come out. Just make sure there aren't too many large holes in the socks, or it makes it too easy!
A Cardboard Box - Fill it up with kibble and treats, and then tape it up good so that there aren't a bunch of ways to break it open. Then cut a hole in one part that will let some kibble and treats fall out.
Generally, I only fill the box up half way, which makes it more fun for them to get the food out.
Let your imagination go wild! Just make sure its safe, and that you supervise your pups the first couple of times you try something.
The idea is to give them a challenge, and what better way to intise them then with food??
