Catch up report- October 8th - 16th

November 15th 2006 00:18
This tiny report is part of my attempts to get The Urban Tele up to date. It’s about a month old.

ARIA Album Chart Report- 16th October
Local Content Score- 6 of top 20

For the second week in a row Jet was in at third to lead the locals. Marcia Hines was again the second local but had fallen to ninth.

Eskimo Joe was in at tenth, Wolfmother at thirteenth, Ms McIntosh at nineteenth and The Rogue Traders at twentieth.

Pretty quiet week really.

Top 20 Weekend Cinema Box Office Takings October 12th - 15th
Local Content Score- 2 of Top 20

Two locals in the Twenty this week but it was still Kenny leading the charge with yet another increase in its weekly box office. This week it was a more modest 6% to get $359,215 but in the box office business any gain is pretty impressive. Kenny did, however, slip to twelfth after some big import results. Still, it broke through the $5 million mark for $5,078,806, which puts it in fairly esteemed company- local films that are a box office success.

The second local film was Irresistible, a movie with big name actors but very little impact at the cinema. It made $122,489 in its debut from a screen count of 47, giving it a fairly respectable $2,606 screen average, but there wasn’t much more expected from this one. Another waste of tax payer money in the name of ‘art’. Sigh.

Top 20 Metropolitan TV Ratings 8th - 14th October
Local Content Score- 14 of top 20

Tamer week this one with Aussie Idol taking the number one spot with 1.891 million viewers. Dancing with the Stars was the next local in at third, followed by Thank God You’re Here at fifth with 1.77 and 1.673 million viewers each.
The Real Sea Change had a pretty good debut in at ninth while behind it in tenth was the Bathurst coverage for a very handy 1.436 million viewers. Not bad for a frantic drive in the country.

Home and Away was in at twelfth while Medical Emergency proved it needed Medical Emergency to make it really successful, only making it to seventeenth. Better Homes and Gardens and All Saints rounded out The Twenty at nineteenth and twentieth.

If you want to check out the charts for any of this week’s stuff just get in contact and I’ll email you a copy.

Catch up report- October 1st-9th

This tiny report is part of my attempts to get The Urban Tele up to date. It’s about a month old.

ARIA Album Chart Report- 9th October
Local Content Score- 8 of top 20

Bigger week in ARIA land with eight locals in The Twenty.

There was a new top local with Jet’s debut in at third, going straight to platinum. It was followed in at third with another debut from Idol judge Marcia Hines in at sixth. That one didn’t even reach gold status.

Eskimo Joe was in at ninth, Stephanie McIntosh was in at thirteenth, Rogue Traders was at fourteenth and Wolfmother at fifteenth.

The last two locals in The Twenty were Kasey Chambers at nineteenth and Evermore at twenty to finish out an impressive week.

Top 20 Weekend Cinema Box Office Takings October 5th - 8th
Local Content Score- 1 of Top 20

The week that propelled Kenny into the ‘okay, I give up’ category of box office watching. After a 33% drop the week before Kenny turned around and increased by 30% for a weekly haul of $338,993. It was amazing stuff and helped Kenny reach tenth spot and $4,564,970, off an average of $3,054 a screen.

From here the question was just much higher could Kenny’s box office go? At this stage it looked like $6 million.

The footy season is upon us, and with it some big figures.

Top 20 Metropolitan TV Ratings 1st - 7th October
Local Content Score- 17 of top 20

This week it was Rugby League’s turn to be the number one show with 2.552 million viewers in the metropolitan area, a figure which was the same as last years. The big difference of course was the fact that there were more Melbourne viewers than Sydney viewers. Bizarre.
Another final show was also in at third with 1.826 million.

Second this week was Dancing with the Stars with a very healthy 1.858 million viewers and Thank God You’re Here in at fourth, which had 1.751 million.

From there it was Aussie Idol at seventh, a very impressive eighth spot for All Saints, and Home and Away in at tenth. Eighth and tenth- they’re huge figures for Aussie drama. Go Aussie drama go.

At twelfth was 20 to 1, Forensic Investigators at fourteenth and Spicks and Specks doing it for public broadcasting at fifteenth. Jamie’s Kitchen and Better Homes and Gardens rounded out the locals at sixteenth and eighteenth, and that was the week that was.

Again, if you want to check out the charts for any of this week’s stuff just get in contact and I’ll email you a copy of each.

This tiny report is part of my attempts to get The Urban Tele up to date. It’s about a month old.

ARIA Album Chart Report- 2nd October
Local Content Score- 6 of top 20

At the dawn of October Eskimo Joe was still in at number four, closely followed by Ms Stephanie McIntosh of Neighbours soapie fame in at fifth.

From fifth it was down to fifteenth with Evermore’s Real Life, then Wolfmother’s self titled in at sixteenth on three platinum wall decorators.

Sixteenth was Rogue Traders and, to round out the locals in the Top Twenty, there was Kasey Chambers in at eighteenth with her Carnival Album.

Top 20 Weekend Cinema Box Office Takings September 28th- October 1st
Local Content Score- 1 of Top 20

Quiet week with only one local, Kenny, in the Top Twenty. But then again, if you wanted one movie in The Twenty Kenny would be it.

Kenny was in at twelfth with a long weekend take of $314,253 off 98 cinema screens. It wasn’t a bad effort with an average of $2,653 per screen but the total was down 33% on the week before. This took Kenny’s total to $4,135,681.

There was another Aussie film released, children’s drama Opal Dream, but this failed to make it into The Twenty after an abysmal $9,149 from 34 screens. Not pretty at all.

Top 20 Metropolitan TV Ratings 24th - 30th September

Big week of footy results with the AFL final dominating. Top was of course the final with 3.145 million viewers across the metros, which is a few hundred thousand down on last year. Other final shows were also in at third, fourth and eleventh with 2.5, 2.27 and 1.49 million viewers respectively.

Also on this week was the Terri Irwin exclusive which came in at second with 2.516 million viewers, making it a massive week of television.

In at fifth was Dancing with the Stars, sixth was Thank God You’re Here, Aussie Idol at eighth and the AFL Footy Show in at tenth.

From there it was down to the bottom five which had All Saints and Home and Away, the rest being news and current affairs shows.

If you’d like to see the full charts just get in touch and I’ll email you copies.

Okay. Enough is enough....

November 8th 2006 02:33
I've had enough. After an eternal hiatus its time to get the Telegraph kicking over again. Unfortunately I'm still suffering from a lack of internet connection, so things are still going to be a bit dodgy, but I've discovered my local library and its bank of internet connected typing machines so at least something will make it out into blog land.

So, a quick reprisal of what's been happening since I've been offline

Apologies

October 5th 2006 01:01
Many, many apologise to anyone who may be looking for the new TV, music and movie updates. My internet connection has died and might not be back up for a while. When it's all sorted out things will be business as usual but until then The Urban Telegraph is going to be a bit quiet.

Aw shucks. I feel my blog is important and loved.
Thanks guys

It's all so true.

I've got a theory about the demise of quality tv as well- anyone notice that the quality all went downhill after the Power Rangers? It was as if the overacted live action and phenomenally successful merchandising infected the rest of afternoon tv as tv executives realised that tv didn't have to be good to be profitable. From that point on they played out the good shows then rolled out dud after dud...

<Sigh>

Remember when anyone at school with a mobile phone was a try-hard yuppie?

Why do Canberra always have no name players? Mogg and Shifcoske (spelling?) got some recognition this year with Origin but usually they have very few big name players to pin to their team. Rugby league's greatest asset is its ability to breed hero players but Canberra cant seem to do it all that well.

With the McIntyre system I think that it should extend to rewarding the teams that finish in the top four with home finals right up to the Grand final. Rather than going to Sydney for the prelims I personally think the team who finished the highest in the regular season get the home ground advantage. That way, if you win all year you get a real benefit from it all, rather than just one home final, even if you lose the first prelim game. Being the best over 26 games means you deserve more than just a prelim at home and a second chance from the first week.

And BroncoBuck- yes, yes we did. We smashed him good

Ag- If there's one thing we do well it's satire, especially at ourselves. Funny about your American friend too because if there's one thing Americans dont do well it's self satire.

I'm with Cibby.

Not being a fashionista the whole scene often confuses me. Why, I ask, is that popular but this not? I try to understand it but the models just look rediculous and I wonder if the designers are just taking the piss.

Then you come across a collection that is really simple, but for some reason blows you away with it's ability to make men and women look sexy/cool/stunning/etc.
It's like poetry for clothing- simplicity that smacks you between the eyes because it just says something awesome.

I reckon this stuff is a good example of that. Very sexy.

Some people just have amazing ability. So jealous of those people.

It's all looking good.

They really know how to sell themselves too. I dont think there'd be many teams that would have got Rogers to get dressed and promote his own signing two years from when he actually plays.

Bring on next season

I dont think it's hatred that Australians have, more like paranoia that leads to fear.

Back when the first colonies were established it was the paranoia and fear of the French colonising the rest of the continant that lead to the establishment of Darwin, Perth etc. After the French it was the Russians, after the Russians it was the Chinese, then the Germans, then the Communists and/or Fascists, back to the Germans, then the Japanese (a paranoia born out for once), then back to the Communists, the Japanese again (this time as businessmen), the Vietnamese boat people, then Muslim boat people... and all this with a layer of paranoia about the Americans trying to make us their 51st state spread liberally across the top.

We're a small country trying to be a big country so we always think that real big countries are one day going to notice how small we really are, then take us for everything that we have.

What politicians should be doing is showing us how stable and safe Australia is. But it's easier to show us how fragile we are.

Actually has a bit more to do with our history. We've actually got a fairly large fascination with our borders, especially people trying to 'invade'.This obsession stretches right back to the first settlement and Border Security gives us a good look at the brave people who protect said borders and what actually goes on to keep the rabble out.
That and it's really well put together- some credit has to go to the producers.

on The Australian and French Language are identical.

September 10th 2006 01:56
Well, for those of us who know how Australian history, we were very close to being French, maybe it was just a lot closer than we thought. Maybe the French showing up a day after the First Settlement sent vocal shockwaves through our culture right up to the present day. It could all be because the first convicts here spent the first few days here impersonating/mocking the frogs who showed up late.
Who knows...
