The World Series of the US

I'm off to the United States of America for a while.

And it gets me thinking - if sport is a metaphor for everything, then is it really so blindingly, effingly obvious that the US plays sports that others don't?

American Football - the eponymous nature of the name is reflected by our own Australian Rules
Basketball - for all its global appeal, still done biggest and best in the States
Baseball - apart from Korea, Japan and Cuba, there can't be many other countries that give the proverbial about this game.
Ice Hockey - Snowy countries are into this for understandable reasons, but it does raise an eyebrow or two when you see a team from Dallas in this competition.
Athletics - 'nuff said.

Yes, the World Series of any of these is guaranteed for success for the US, success they can't guarantee in other fields.

But who really gets pleasure from winning it all, when not all are involved?

I suspect the answer is, they are not aware others are not involved.

We'll see if it's that simple.

The Tour continues!

The Tour does indeed continue, so what have we learnt today?

We can say for sure that despite Peter Roebuck's histrionics in the Sydney Morning Herald today - calling for the sacking of Australia's "streetfighting" capitain, Ricky Ponting, and despite the almost welcome news that Cricket got a run on Channel Nine's A Current Affair, there remains one huge yawning chasm in the understanding of the casual Aussie cricket fan.

Specifically: Our politics don't mean much. Because our politics are not our own. The BCCI - needing to be seen to be strong and appease the new western-skeptics in India's massive quasi-democracy - simply had to wield the big stick.

And while everybody everywhere recognises that American domestic concerns tend to drive US foreign policy, we soon forget that it is the same for all nations. And that ours, 20 million strong Australia, is no match for the chaotic Machiavellian intrigue of even the smallest Indian round table.

So we focus our attentions back on the field, where actions speak louder than words, and we can gauge the content of our character. It's just that -

on this field, the actions are about words.

How bizarre. I shall write no more on this topic, unless of course, things get stranger than they already are.

Welcome! to the blog, the b-log, the blo-g "When Sport is a Metaphor for Everything"

[This is going to take a while to work out. Even basic HTML leaves your blogger blotto, but I can promise one thing - if you stick with me, you'll waste a whole lot more of your day or week seeing sport through another's eyes.

So today, to start off with, what better than the Indian cricket team? In a crystal clear of example of "any bullying you can do we can do better" we are being treated to the threat of lost revenue, of lost time, of lost cricket from a batting line-up of the highest quality.

The bullying by the Australian cricket team, and the surprisingly lowdown Ricky Ponting is nothing to the full muscle flex the BCCI - that group of distinguished Indian gentlemen now threaten to retract and smash firmly in the warm, soft guts of the Australian cricketing public.

Yes, because if you ever wanted a true example of South Asian democracy, the old "we'll see if we get the result we want, and if we don't we won't recognise it, and furthermore will punish you" routine threatens the sanctity of the gentlemen's code that the Australian players ON THE FIELD do so much to threaten in their own right.

That's not the type of democracy we want here. Or anywhere.

How sad that true gentlemen, Kumble, Dhoni, Dravid among them, are used as pawns, and how sad that true twits, like Harbhajhan are able to be the catalyst to events such as these.

It's poor form all round. Let's wait and see what happens.
