February 5th 2009 06:05
“Gild the Lily” is the famous phrase used by William Shakespeare in his play King John. Gild means to cover with a thin layer of gold. But why did he refer it to the Lily is the question that comes to our mind? Because Lily is the beautiful flower and covering it with gold to make it more beautiful would be necessary. So, the phrase came into picture which meant to spoil something which is already beautiful by adding something extra.
