Getting Rid of the Typos

October 24th 2006 09:18
I have excellent typing skills, but I still make typos. Everyone does. There isn't a person alive who can type without errors. It stands to reason, then, that if you're writing, there's going to be errors in your work. Most of them will be simple typos and unintentional mistakes. They're the type of things you can correct yourself, if you know what you're looking for. Unfortunately, they're also the type of errors that, as a writer, you often miss in your own work.

Most writers will read over their work when they are finished to ensure that there are no typos, spelling errors or other similar mistakes. However, even if they read over their work, there's a good chance they might miss the type of errors they are looking for. When you have written something, you know what it is meant to say. Often, we simply read what we know should be there, instead of what actually is there.

Here are a number of tricks to help you spot the errors and typos in your work and get rid of them.

1. Read your work out loud. It's amazing how errors can stand out when we actually read out our work.
2. Read backwards. This will help you spot spelling errors and other similar mistakes.
3. Do a grammar check. Grammar checks will often pick up when the wrong word has been used.
4. Check for common errors. If you know your problem areas, pay particular attention to these.
5. Give your writing a break. Returning to it later will help you gain some distance from your work.
6. Get someone else to read your work. A fresh eye will see things you miss.

#5 is my favorite. Tuck the piece in a drawer, walk away. Give it at least three days, if not longer. When you go back to it and it's not all fresh in the memory, the errors leap off the page. Time is the best editor, I believe. Give it a rest, go back to it refreshed.

Excellent advice!
