Getting Married? Me too!
January 15th 2007 06:05
On 28 November 2006, I came home to dimmed lights, a staircase full of red roses, scented candles and a handsome man in a James Bond-style tux down on one knee.
It was my boyfriend of 2 years sweating it out for the first time in his life as he asked me to marry him. And when I say sweating, I mean the poor guy was reeeally nervous.
Understandably, he was committing himself to a lifetime of watching girly movies on a friday night, eating chocolate for breakfast and lots of non-sensical giggling. Plus in true old skool style, he asked my dad for permission first and that would have been a mission in itself.
But he managed to get the words out as he opened up the little ring box and as my eyes darted between the diamond in the box and the sparkle in his eye, I could do nothing but giggle, then cry, then giggle some more.
OF COURSE I'LL MARRY YOU.
So here I am 2 months later, still very excited and still giggling at the thought of spending my life with this supremely fantastic guy. I've bought about 10 Wedding Magazines and been given another 30 from my mother-in-law-to-be. I've started staying home on certain nigts of the week so I can watch reruns of Bridezilla and Who's Wedding Is It Anyway on Foxtel.
And of course, I've heard countless stories from friends and family about the ups and downs of their wedding preparations and their wedding day, and now it's my turn to impart my knowledge on to you.
Whoever reckons the institution of marriage is long gone, you are wrong! It is alive and well and I know this because the wedding industry is booming as much as ever.
So as I research options regarding venues, flowers, dresses and cars for my own wedding, I will post them up for you to read. I hope my posts will assist you in preparing for your special day.
I also hope this forum will give everyone (including myself) the opportunity to vent when things don't go according to plan! Annoying bridesmaids? Money issues? Parental pressure? Yep, I'll cover it all.
I was given some excellent advice by a friend of mine who recently celebrated her 1 year anniversary and I think I will write it at the top of every post as a constant reminder. She told me to "remember the big picture - You get to spend the rest of your life with him and that's all that really matters".
Here, here.

Congratulations! I did the deed 5 years ago and the day was great. I found a good trick was to give each parent something they can do/organise and that keeps them quiet and happy
Enjoy, I did!

JohnDoe- very appropriate that you inserted the reference to the iron chef. I used to hate that program until i met my fiance and found out that he loved it. All of a sudden I started to see why that show is so funny and now, believe it or not, watching the IC is one of my favourite things...
Scarlett, Tracy and Bhumika- thanks also! And tracey, thanks for the tip! I'd love to hear about your experiences and how your wedding day went so please keep me posted!
Joe Blogg have you been married already?

Congratulations. I really hope everything goes smoothly for you.
The best bit of advice I was given when I got married was from my mum. She said that it's so easy to let the whole day just happen and when you think back on it you can't remember any details it was all so overwhelming. So she told me to concentrate on remembering.
Remember to remember.
Happy planning.
